Legg Mason Partners Core Plus A (SHMGX) seeks high current income consistent with liquidity and safety of capital. It was incepted in September 1984.
The fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in debt obligations issued by the U.S. government, including government obligations, corporate debt, and mortgage-backed securities. It invests up to 20% of assets in below investment grade securities and those issued by foreign issuers.
The fund distributes dividends monthly and distributes capital gains, if any, once a year, typically in December. It has an expense ratio of 1.00 %.
Carl Eichstaedt has been lead manager of the fund since February 2006. Eichstaedt is a Chartered Financial Analyst and is a portfolio manager with Western Asset Management, a subsidiary of Legg Mason.
Legg Mason Financial Services A (SBFAX) was incepted in February 2000. The objective of the fund is to seek long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in common stocks.
The fund normally invests at least 80% of its net assets in securities of companies engaged in providing financial services to consumers and other industries. It invests primarily in mid and large-capital companies and also invests in small-capital companies. The fund invests in foreign as well as domestic issuers.
The fund has an expense ratio of 1.50%. As of June 2009, it has a portfolio turnover of 11%
Amy LaGuardia has been lead manager of the fund since November 1998. Before joining Barrett Associates, a subsidiary of Legg Mason in May 2003 as senior vice president, LaGuardia was senior vice president and director of research at Gray, Seifert & Co., Inc.
Legg Mason Divers Strategic Income A (SDSAX) seeks high current income. It was incepted in November 1992.
The fund invests in a variety of fixed-income securities, such as domestic and foreign government and corporate securities, including high-yield bonds. The fund may invest up to 50% of its assets in below investment grade securities and up to 20% of assets in below investment grade securities issued by issuers from emerging market countries. It also invests in derivatives including credit default swaps, futures contracts, synthetic instruments and other instruments.
Shareholders have to make a minimum initial investment of $1,000 to enter this Zacks #1 Rank ("Strong Buy") fund As of July 2009 it has a portfolio turnover of 32 %.
Keith J. Gardner has been lead manager of the fund since February 2006. Gardner has over 25 years of investment experience and has been with Western Asset since November 1994
