Trump Says He'll Get Debt Ceiling Fixed 'Properly' After House Passes Legislation To Avoid US Default

Former President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, for the first time, reacted to the recently negotiated debt ceiling deal as the lawmakers in the House were engaged in final deliberations ahead of the crucial vote.

What Happened: Trump, in a radio interview on Des Moines’ 1040 WHO, said, "Well, it is what it is,” adding that he will get it "fixed" in two years, reported NBC News.

"It has passed. And I guess I knew it was going to passed…but we'll get it properly fixed in two years," Trump said ahead of the final voting.

Meanwhile, the debt ceiling deal successfully cleared the House on Wednesday evening, garnering support from 314 representatives, while 117 voted against it. The bill has now advanced to the Senate for further consideration.

When the host Simon Conway asked Trump about his earlier statement where he urged Republicans to let the U.S. default if there weren't significant spending cuts, the ex-president said, "Well, I would have done that.”

“I think it was an opportunity, but they got something done. Kevin worked really hard,” he said, adding, “I would have taken a different stance, but it's done…we'll get it fixed in two years.”

Why It Matters: The former president is the front-running Republican candidate for the 2024 U.S. presidential election. As per a May Quinnipiac University poll, the 76-year-old Trump had 56% support from GOP voters, while his primary opponent Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, sits at 25% support among the same voters.

Yet in the overall election, Biden held a slight lead over Trump among registered voters, with 48% to 46%.
