US Stocks Mixed; NY State Business Activity Rises In February

U.S. stocks traded mixed this morning, with the Dow Jones index falling around 100 points on Tuesday.

Following the market opening Tuesday, the Dow traded down 0.24% to 44,440.80 while the NASDAQ rose 0.26% to 20,078.31. The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.11% to 6,121.11.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Information technology shares jumped by 0.7% on Tuesday.

In trading on Tuesday, consumer staples shares fell by 0.6%.

Top Headline

The NY Empire State Manufacturing Index rose by 18.3 points to a reading of +5.7 in February, topping market estimates of -1.

In commodity news, oil traded up 0.7% to $71.22 while gold traded up 1.2% at $2,936.80.

Silver traded up 0.9% to $33.135 on Tuesday, while copper fell 2.1% to $4.5655.

European shares were higher today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 rose 0.4%, Germany's DAX 40 rose 0.2% and France's CAC 40 rose 0.3%. Spain's IBEX 35 Index rose 0.6%, while London's FTSE 100 rose 0.1%.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed mixed on Tuesday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 gaining 0.25%, China's Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.93%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gaining 1.59% and India's BSE Sensex falling 0.04%.

Economics
