Nokia Broadens Patent Assualt Against Apple (commentary)

Absolutely ridiculous broadening of Nokia's already specious lawsuit against Apple. Nokia has spent it's life in the wireless standards game which is a contest over who has the best lawyers. In this particular case, Nokia is the market leader and is losing share and feels like it can't do anything about it.

How about hiring some decent software engineers to make some decent software? Instead you have what? Symbian?

This is the same old game Nokia and Qualcomm used to play over wireless standards. When one would start to gain share, the other would argue infringement and seek "a piece" in court.

Look, I'm happy to be very critical of things Apple does and I've done so when I think there is a problem. In this case, I hope Apple cleans Nokia's clock. I'd argue for an organized boycott of Nokia's products but I don't know that people are planning on buying a lot of Nokia products these days. Via 9to5Mac:

Nokia’s attempt to take on Apple in the courts has gone up a gear following the company’s decision to file a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Apple infringes Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers.

Nokia states: “The seven Nokia patents in this complaint relate to Nokia's pioneering innovations that are now being used by Apple to create key features in its products in the area of user interface, as well as camera, antenna and power management technologies.

“These patented technologies are important to Nokia's success as they allow better user experience, lower manufacturing costs, smaller size and longer battery life for Nokia products.”

"Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in small electronic devices" said Paul Melin, General Manager, Patent Licensing at Nokia
