Musk, Zuckerberg Set For Face-to-Face Encounter; No Cage Involved, Bill Gates Joins Too

Zinger Key Points
  • After being snubbed on several meetings about AI with the White House, Elon Musk may be tasked with sharing insight with Congress members.
  • Musk and Zuckerberg have had many differences in 2023, but may be important to come together on AI regulation.

Two of the richest people in the world have traded insults with each other over the past several months with plans to settle their differences in a cage match.

While the fight may not happen, the two billionaires could be in a room together soon.

What Happened: After accusations of Meta Platforms Inc META copying Twitter with its Threads platform, Twitter owner Elon Musk issued a challenge to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to meet him in a cage fight.

While the cage fight has generated plenty of hype and could be one of the highest pay-per-view fights of all time, it remains questionable to happen.

Musk and Zuckerberg will be meeting in a room together next month, according to a report from Axios.

The two billionaires are among the guests that are listed to be invited for a closed-door forum with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

According to Axios, the first AI insight forum will include Musk and Zuckerberg meeting alongside Alphabet Inc GOOGGOOGL CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia Corp. NVDA CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft Corp. MSFT CEO Satya Nadella, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates.

Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, is also listed in the report.

The event will also feature civil society groups and unions.

Axios said the meeting will last between two and three hours and is meant to help educate lawmakers. Other lawmakers who will be included are Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.).

Why It’s Important: Musk being included in talks on AI comes after he was previously involved with the initial funding of OpenAI. He has been vocal about integrating AI in companies he is associated with including Twitter, now known as X, and Tesla Inc TSLA.

Musk recently launched X.ai and owns the AI.com website. The billionaire has been outspoken that artificial intelligence should be regulated, which may have prompted his involvement in the bipartisan efforts from Schumer.

Musk has been notably absent from several conversations about artificial intelligence that have involved technology giants and President Joe Biden.

Altman previously spoke about artificial intelligence regulation in front of Congress.

Vice President Kamala Harris had been tasked with leading artificial intelligence efforts for the Biden administration previously, something Musk shared his criticism of.
