Trump Voices Strong Opposition To Appointment Of David Weiss In Hunter Biden Case: 'Would Not Have Been Picked By Me'

Zinger Key Points
  • Trump criticized the decision and sought to distance himself from his own nomination of Weiss to the U.S. attorney position.
  • Republicans Kevin McCarthy and James Comer also disapproved of Garland's choice to name Weiss.

On Friday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said that David Weiss, the federal prosecutor from Delaware overseeing the criminal inquiry into Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, would be designated as a special counsel for the case.

After Weiss' appointment by Garland, former President Donald Trump criticized the decision and sought to distance himself from his own nomination of Weiss to the U.S. attorney position.

On his social media site Truth Social, Trump wrote, "The two Democrat Senators picked David Weiss from Delaware under 'Blue Slip.' He would not have been picked by me."

"But I have a great idea. Why don't they use Deranged Jack Smith," Trump added.

The former president, who has been embroiled in controversy, continued saying, "Weiss has been investigating Hunter for 4 years, giving him the 'sweetheart' deal of all sweetheart deals. But a brilliant Judge in Delaware saw through it all. Now, I read, the Department of Injustice wants a new Judge and Jurisdiction. But so do I, with far stronger reasons than Hunter & Crooked Joe. MAGA!!!"

According to multiple reports, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer disapproved of Garland's choice to name Weiss as special counsel on Friday. The two Republicans contended that Weiss' involvement in negotiating the contentious plea deal for Hunter Biden undermined his credibility and trustworthiness.

Garland said that Weiss asked earlier this week to be named special counsel. Weiss began investigating Hunter Biden in 2019.

"Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel," CNBC quoted Garland saying during a press conference.
