  • A documentary about the war filmed by Sean Penn also recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.

A new documentary about the war between Russia and Ukraine includes comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

What Happened: February 2023 marked the one-year anniversary since Russia invaded Ukraine in what Russian President Vladimir Putin called a “special military operation” at the time.

A new documentary called “Year” that takes a look at the year anniversary of the war includes comments from Zelenskyy.

“There will definitely be a moment when the fragility of Putin’s regime will be felt inside their state,” the Ukrainian president said, as reported by the New York Post.

Zelenskyy predicts that Putin will be killed by his own people in the form of an assassination.

“The predators will eat a predator … They will find a reason to kill a killer.”

Zelenskyy wasn’t sure of the timing of his prediction, but said there could be an “important moment” where rebels turn on Putin. The comments made to filmmaker Dmitry Komarov by Zelenskyy come as the Ukrainian president is appealing to the Russia people.

“Will it work? Yes. But I don’t know when.”

Why It’s Important: The president of Ukraine said the documentary was important for the world to see the brutality of the war.

Footage in the documentary included bodies scattered in the streets of Ukraine, which Zelenskyy said prove that Putin “is a tyrant.”

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia was originally seen as a short conflict to last days or weeks, with many Russians now losing support for Putin and the effort. Protests in Russia, which are uncommon, have continued against the war.

A new poll also showed that only 22% of the Russian population support the war, with another 22% deeply opposed to it.

Another documentary about the war in Ukraine was filmed by American actor Sean Penn. The film titled “Superpower” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival to a standing ovation from the audience.

Penn originally planned on filming a movie about Zelenskyy, but it quickly became a documentary of the invasion by Russia, as the actor and his co-director were filming in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv when the Russian invasion began.

The latest comments from Zelenskyy and the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine come as Russia is expected to hold its presidential elections in 2024. Putin has not announced whether he will run for re-election, and a spokesman for the president said it was too early to discuss his intentions.

Putin has served as prime minister or president of Russia continuously since 1999. He signed a law in 2021 that will allow him to run for president two more times in his lifetime, which could extend his leadership role in the country until 2036.
