Sony Delays PlayStation 5 Event Due To Protests, Says It Wants To 'Allow More Important Voices To Be Heard'

Sony’s reveal of its latest gaming console, the PlayStation 5, due Thursday, has been postponed because of the ongoing protests over the death of George Floyd, an African-American who was killed by a white policeman while being taken into custody.

Sony’s big reveal,  touted as “a look at the future of gaming on PlayStation 5,” has been put off, the company said on Twitter.

The postponement follows the rise of protests, which have broken out across the United States after Floyd was killed May 25 by a police officer Derek Chauvin.

Why It Matters

The improvements made in the next generation PlayStation are astounding, according to system architect Mark Cerny.

PlayStation 5 is set to hit the shelves in the holiday season, but there are no details as of yet on the availability of exclusive games, reported Business Insider.

Sony's competitor Microsoft Corporation MSFT has taken a divergent stand and posted a slew of information about its upcoming Xbox Series X console.

Sony will produce fewer PlayStation 5 consoles due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has swept the world.

On Monday, Sony shares closed 1.13% higher at $65.49 in New York. The shares traded 2.90% higher at $66.61 at press-time on Tuesday in Tokyo.
