Rapidus Eyes Big Investment To Boost Japan's Chip Trajectory, Collaborates With IBM To Commercialize 2-Nm Tech - IBM (NYSE:IBM)

International Business Machines Corp IBM and Rapidus Corp announced a joint development partnership to advance logic scaling technology as part of Japan's initiatives to become a global leader in semiconductor research, development, and manufacturing.
Rapidus and IBM will further develop IBM's breakthrough 2-nm node technology for implementation by Rapidus at its fab in Japan.
Rapidus scientists and engineers will work alongside IBM Japan, and IBM researchers at the Albany NanoTech Complex owned and operated by NY CREATES in Albany, New York.

Japan's newly formed chip foundry venture Rapidus backed by Toyota Motor Corp TM, Sony Group Corp SONY, and six other Japanese companies, sought to invest several trillion yen to reboot the country's semiconductor industry.
Rapidus expects to start mass production of its 2-nm technology in 2027 at a plant it plans to build in Japan, Bloomberg reports.
In November, Rapidus won 70 billion yen ($510 million) in subsidies from the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd TSM plans to mass produce 2nm chips in 2025, while Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd SSNLF began mass production of 3-nm chips in June.
