What We Already Know About the New iPhone

Today is the big day,
October 4, 2011.
Of course by now, you know that Apple
AAPL
is going to announce its new version of the iPhone, the iPhone 5. There are plenty of rumors about what is actually in the phone. So far, we have heard everything from a
talking app,
known as Assistant, to a larger screen, to thinner, to a million different other things. All of these seem to be pretty straight on the mark, with Assistant potentially being the biggest change to the latest iteration of the world's most iconic phone. Assistant would allow you to talk to your phone and actually do internet searches for you, such as finding restaurants, looking up jobs, getting hotels, etc. It almost seems as if it is trying to help you become a better you, as it learns what you do and do not like. Assistant is supposedly being powered by Nuance Communications
NUAN
voice-recognition technology. There is also the potential for a more powerful chip, the A2, which powers the iPad. This is significantly more powerful than the chips that have run the previous versions of the iPhone. Apple's own A-line chips are based off ARM Holdings
ARMH
technology, as are most smart-phone and tablet chips. Verizon
VZ
and AT&T
T
have been the two iPhone carriers, with AT&T carrying the iPhone exclusively up until earlier this year. Now we are hearing that Sprint

S
has ordered
$30.5 billion worth of iPhone 5 inventory,
as it tries to compete with Verizon and AT&T. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse cited the major reason that people leave Sprint to go to the larger carriers as being the iPhone. We also know that demand for the iPhone 4, as well as the iPhone 5, has never been stronger. According to Goldman Sachs, t is surprising that iPhone 4 demand is still exceptionally strong, despite everyone and their brother knowing about the event today. In fact, Piper Jaffray expects
over 200 million iOS devices in 2013,
some of which would likely include new sales of the iPhone 4, including the potential iPhone 4S. Lastly, we know that this will be new CEO Tim Cook's first presentation as the official CEO, after taking over for Steve Jobs back in August. Jobs resigned due to health reasons, and Cook has continued to run things exactly the same as Jobs had when he was leading the Cupertino-based company. If this Apple conference is like past conferences, there will be a "one more thing" that we do not expect. We will all know at 1 p.m. The tech world, investors, journalists and Apple fanboys alike are all waiting. Perhaps, if we are lucky, it may be a certain
co-founder of the company.
