In a first-of-its-kind event, Argentine President Javier Milei is preparing to meet Elon Musk at Tesla‘s headquarters in Austin, Texas.

What Happened: The meeting, reported by Argentine television channel LN+, is scheduled for next Thursday. The two influential figures have been publicly praising each other on social media, leading to this highly anticipated in-person meeting.

Before the meeting, Milei will be in Miami to accept the “International Ambassador of Light” award from the Chabad Lubavitch community, recognizing his efforts for Israel and his promotion of freedom. The award will be presented at the inauguration of the Menachem Mendel Schneerson Center.

Gerardo Werthein, the future Argentine ambassador to the U.S. and former president of the Argentine Olympic Committee, will accompany Milei in place of his sister, Karina Milei.

Following his meeting with Musk, Milei intends to travel to Denmark to negotiate the purchase of an F-16 aircraft via NATO, as part of his initiative to rebuild Argentina’s Armed Forces.

The meeting was finalized after a phone conversation between Milei and Musk, during which they discussed the possibility of a face-to-face meeting. Milei thanked Musk for his support and his global representation as a symbol of freedom.

Why It Matters: The upcoming meeting between Milei and Musk follows a series of events that have brought the two figures into the spotlight. In December 2023, Musk shared a video featuring Milei’s critique of social justice, leading Milei to respond, “We Need To Talk“.

Since then, Milei has initiated major reforms targeting state-owned enterprises in Argentina, a move that could significantly alter the country’s economic landscape. These reforms have faced considerable legislative challenges, as Milei aims to privatize these entities.

Known for his pro-Bitcoin stance, Milei has attributed Argentina’s slow transition to the U.S. dollar to the corrupt practices of its politicians and economists. Musk is also a known advocate for cryptocurrencies.
