WATCH: Hyundai Spinoff Mobinn's Novel Delivery Bot Surmounts Stair-Climbing Hurdle

Hyundai Motor Co HYMTF spinoff Mobinn presented its M3 delivery robot at CES 2024 in Las Vegas with wheels that can seamlessly traverse stairs, bagging a CES Innovation Honoree Award in the robotics category.

What Happened: The robot has an independently developed wheel system capable of overcoming stairs and bumps. Spillage is avoided by keeping the loading box always horizontal even as the vehicle shifts across levels. The robot further employs a LiDAR-based mapping system which allows it to navigate during night hours or adverse weather conditions like rain or snow.

A video posted by the startup’s CEO Choi Jin on Wednesday shows the robot traveling down ramps, crossing a road, along sidewalks, and up the stairs to deliver food. The video also shows representational images of other products being developed by the company including a parcel delivery robot, a patrol robot, and a traffic control robot.

Why It Matters: Mobinn’s innovative technology enables the bot to deliver directly to customers residing above the ground level, removing the necessity for customers to retrieve their packages from the sidewalk.

Mobinn’s CEO told TechCrunch that the bot’s technology was developed over a few years at Hyundai until it was spun off in 2023. Despite the physical strain of ascension, Jin affirmed that the partly autonomous bot can function for an extended duration of up to 8 hours continuously.

Currently, the delivery bots are undergoing trials on Korean streets, the report added.
