Apple Vision Pro Competitor? Sony Shows Off New Mixed Reality Headset With A Controller Wand And Ring

Sony Group Corp. SONY has showcased a mixed reality headset for "spatial content creation" at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, with a launch expected for later this year.

What Happened: According to a report by Engadget, Sony’s CES 2024 presentation included the introduction of a new XR head-mounted display and controllers, currently unnamed.

Sony aims at creators and artists who develop and interact with products in virtual realms.

The Sony headset's unveiling comes close on the heels of Apple Inc.'s AAPL Vision Pro launch – the Tim Cook-led company has announced that it will be available for purchase starting Feb. 2, 2024.

Sony has used Qualcomm Inc.'s QCOM newly unveiled Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. It operates independently of a computer and promises a "crisp viewing experience" and “intuitive interaction for 3D design”, as mentioned by Sony’s CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida.

In addition to “video see-through” features, Sony's headset integrates six cameras and sensors.

The company has also unveiled a controller wand for object manipulation and a ring as a “pointing controller” for navigation. Sony envisions creators constructing 3D models in real-time using these controllers in conjunction with traditional input devices.
