Asus Keeps Gaming Phone Hopes Alive With ROG Phone 8, Now With A Dose Of AI

Zinger Key Points
  • Asus has updated its gaming phone lineup with the new ROG Phone 8 series.
  • These dedicated gaming phones address a key issue with Asus’ offerings so far.

Asus has launched a new iteration of its ROG Phone series, the ROG Phone 8 lineup, featuring a more streamlined design, improved specifications, and AI upgrades at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024.

What Happened: Asus unveiled the ROG Phone 8, ROG Phone 8 Pro, and ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition powered by Qualcomm Inc.'s QCOM Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

With the ROG Phone 8, Asus has addressed one of the issues that prevented these phones from being adopted by a wider audience – the design itself.

The new ROG Phone 8 series is now slimmer and lighter and offers better dust and water resistance. The slimmer form factor should appeal to phone buyers other than just gamers.

Despite the ROG Phones being targeted at gaming enthusiasts only, Asus has continued to update these phones over the years. These phones are also amongst the only dedicated gaming phones currently available in the U.S.

Asus has also incorporated a new cooling system using boron nitride and copper to manage heat from the Snapdragon chipset.

With "AI" being a buzzword right now, Asus has also done something in this aspect – its new ROG phones include AI features such as “AI Grabber”, allowing users to search for video game walkthroughs based on the in-game text on their screens.

The new ROG Phone 8 series also comes with the same AI wallpaper feature that we've seen on Google's Pixel 8 series.

Pricing: The ROG Phone 8 series covers a range of specifications and prices.

The standard ROG Phone 8 is priced at $1,099 and comes with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

The ROG Phone 8 Pro, priced at $1,199, features 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

The top-tier ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition, priced at $1,499, offers 24GB RAM and 1TB storage.

Both the Pro models also display LED dot-matrix displays on their backsides.

The ROG Phone 8 series is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. The models come with a 5,500mAh battery, fast charging up to 65W, and a 6.78-inch OLED display. The camera setup includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 13-megapixel ultrawide, and a 32-megapixel telephoto with a 3x optical zoom.

Why It Matters: Although the ROG phones are primarily designed for gamers, the ROG Phone 8 lineup could appeal to a broader demographic thanks to some much-needed design tweaks.

Asus' new phones will be launched in the U.K. and Europe in February, with a U.S. release date yet to be disclosed.
