From Shattered Window To Production Line: Tesla Cybertruck Was Unveiled Four Years Ago Today

EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA announced its first electric pickup truck four years on Nov. 21. After four long years of waiting, the company is now gearing up to deliver its first Cybertruck.

What Happened: Tesla introduced the Cybertruck in 2019 at an event in Los Angeles. Musk then said the truck was inspired by two films, ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘The Spy Who Loved me.’

The company then pegged the vehicle’s starting price below $50,000 and said production would start in 2021. However, what made the Cybertruck introduction memorable was the stainless steel vehicle and the demonstration that ensued. In a bid to demonstrate the exoskeleton-based vehicle’s indestructibility, Tesla designer Franz Von Holzhausen put its window to the test with a metal ball. The demonstration failed with the window shattering but sent demand soaring as it became a viral sensation. In under five days, the company received 250,000 pre-orders for the vehicle.

After several delays and expected delivery timelines, the company is finally gearing up for a Cybertruck delivery event on Nov. 30 at its Gigafactory in Texas and sending out invites. The company has also started restocking Cybertruck-themed merchandise on its online Tesla shop.

What’s Ahead: During Tesla's third-quarter earnings call, Musk indicated that the company envisions delivering approximately 250,000 Cybertrucks in a year in the future. However, he cautioned that this target might not be achieved next year.

"I think we’ll probably reach it sometime in 2025. That’s my best guess," Musk then said.

According to data from a crowd-sourced online reservation tracker for the Cybertruck, net reservations for the vehicle have now crossed the two million thresholds. Reservations hit the one million mark as early as May 2021.
