Jimmy Carter's Wife Joins Husband In Hospice Care, Announces Grandson: 'Spending Time With Each Other'

The former First Lady of the U.S., Rosalynn Carter, has joined her husband, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, in receiving hospice care at their home in Georgia.

What Happened: The announcement was made by Jason Carter, the couple’s grandson, through a brief statement issued by the Carter Center, a non-profit human rights organization, The Guardian reported.

“Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has entered hospice care at home,” the statement read.

"She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family. The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support."

Why It Matters: The Carter Center had earlier, in May, announced that Rosalynn Carter was diagnosed with dementia. Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the U.S., had begun home hospice care in February after deciding against further medical intervention for multiple health issues.

The Carters, married since 1946, have requested privacy during this time. They expressed gratitude for the continued expressions of love and support. The couple has been spending their time together and with their family.

Following his presidency, Jimmy Carter has been a highly respected international diplomat. In 2015, he successfully underwent a liver mass removal and later announced he was cancer-free after undergoing radiation and immunotherapy.

Rosalynn Carter is widely recognized for her contributions to mental health advocacy. She established the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers and has made significant contributions to the field.
