  • One of Biden's top priorities is getting missing Americans back safely.

The events of the Middle East conflict have been weighing on the mind of President Joe Biden. In an exclusive interview, he shared with “60 Minutes” his efforts to get American hostages back to loved ones.

What Happened: Ever since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by the Hamas militant group, thousands have died and many hostages were taken — including several Americans.

“We’re going to do everything in our power to find those who are still alive and set them free. Everything in our power,” Biden said during an episode of “60 Minutes.”

The interview aired on Sunday on CBS, a unit of Paramount Global PARAPARAA.

Biden spoke with the families of fourteen American families who have loved ones missing amid the Middle East conflict. The president spoke to the families during a video call on Friday.

Along with the missing loved ones, 29 Americans were killed in the conflict.

Biden told “60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley that he wouldn’t go into detail on what the country was planning to do, but added, “We’re workin' like hell on it.”

Why It’s Important: During the interview, Biden was asked why it was so important to communicate with families over a video call.

“I think they have to know that the president of the United States of America cares deeply about what’s happening. Deeply,” Biden said.

Biden described Hamas' actions as “pure barbarism.” While rescuing hostages is among his biggest priorities, he stressed the importance of “ending this brutality and to hold those who committed it accountable.”

Biden also promised to support Israel with "everything they need" and brushed off the potential for U.S. troops to help with the effort.
