Biden Warns Against Recolonization Of Gaza By Israel Amid Rising Tensions: 'I Think It'd Be A Big Mistake'

In the recent "60 Minutes" interview with host Scott Pelley, President Joe Biden voiced out against the potential reoccupation of Gaza by Israel, as the latter prepares for a ground invasion of the Palestinian enclave. The interview came amidst escalating tensions in the region.

According to The Washington Post report, Biden’s comments were a clear warning to Israel, amid expectations of a robust Israeli ground invasion.

"I think it'd be a big mistake. Hamas and the extreme elements of Hamas don't represent all the Palestinian people. And I think that … it would be a mistake … for Israel to occupy … Gaza again,” he said.

Biden’s stance, one of his firmest so far, attempts to impose a limit on Israel's retaliatory actions against Hamas attacks, which have led to the death of around 1,400 people. Biden underlined the necessity of eliminating extremists, without overlooking the need for a Palestinian Authority and a path to a Palestinian state.

Despite its withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, Israel effectively controls most aspects of life in the region. Human rights groups have criticized the full siege of Gaza, following recent attacks, as a breach of war laws. Gazan residents are currently facing a fuel crisis and lack of safe drinking water.

Even amid Israeli airstrikes on Gaza resulting in over 2,600 fatalities, Biden has consistently supported Israel. The White House is currently discussing potential travel plans for Biden to Israel, possibly within this week. However, White House officials have not confirmed these plans yet.

Reports suggest that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Biden to Israel during a phone call on Saturday. However, logistical and political challenges might arise if Biden visits while a severe Israeli incursion into Gaza is ongoing.

In response to queries on the possibility of a Palestinian state post the Hamas attacks, Biden replied, “Not now.”

He added that Israel recognizes that a significant portion of the Palestinian population does not support the views of Hamas and Hezbollah.
