Tim Cook's 'Aha Moment' with Apple's Vision Pro — 'You Only Have A Few Of Those In A Lifetime'

Apple Inc. AAPL CEO Tim Cook has described his first encounter with the company’s first-generated mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, as an ‘aha moment,’ highlighting the transformative potential of spatial computing.

What Happened: During his recent visit to Apple’s Battersea Power Station headquarters in London, Cook spoke about the remarkable impact of the Vision Pro headset.

He acknowledged that developers worldwide are eagerly awaiting its release and are already making significant strides in creating applications for the device, reported the Independent.

“We have developer labs in London and Munich, and we’re seeing some incredible work. There’s so much excitement out there,” the CEO said.

Cook revealed that the Vision Pro has become a part of his daily routine, allowing him to understand its potential as a game-changing product better.

He stressed the importance of firsthand experience, stating, “There are huge differences in how people look at it, depending on if they’ve read about it or actually tried it,” adding, “I believe even more about how profound spatial computing is. When you’ve tried it, it’s an aha moment, and you only have a few of those in a lifetime.”

Furthermore, the tech mogul touched upon Apple’s role as a toolmaker, underscoring the company’s commitment to providing user-friendly developer tools.

Cook said, “These apps allow developers to make people more sustainable, give somebody educational knowhow about space, or even democratize personal training. These are big ideas. These apps are great collaborations, but our whole company is based on collaboration. We really believe one plus one equals three.”

According to him, the focus should be on the developers’ ideas as they drive innovation. He expressed satisfaction in seeing this philosophy validate itself in the success of the App Store, the report noted.

For the unversed, in 2011, when Cook became Apple’s CEO after Steve Jobs, the world of mobile apps was just starting. Instagram was new, and apps like Deliveroo and Tinder didn’t exist.

Fast forward about ten years and Apple’s App Store is now making more than $1 trillion in money transactions and sales every year, making Cupertino the wealthiest company in the world, the report noted.

Why It’s Important: The Vision Pro headset is expected to launch in early 2024. The company unveiled its during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference 2023 earlier this year.

Although Apple’s Vision Pro eliminates the need for additional accessories, as users can control the headset using their hands, eyes, and voice, the device comes with a hefty price tag of $3,499, leading many to question its worth as an investment.

In contrast, Apple’s rival in the AR/VR market, Meta Platforms Inc. META, has launched its Quest 3 headset at a starting price of only $499.

Meta’s latest headset comes with an upgraded Qualcomm chip, improved screens, and an innovative feature, “passthrough” — allowing users to glimpse the real world outside the headset quickly.
