Latest rumors suggest that Apple Inc. AAPL might be considering the addition of a dedicated camera shutter button to its iPhone 16 models, expected to launch next year.
What Happened: Apple could incorporate a capacitive “Capture Button” just below the sleep/wake button, reported MacRumors, citing unnamed sources.
While the exact function of this button remains undisclosed, its name strongly hints at its role as a dedicated camera shutter.

According to the source, internally, the “Capture Button” is referred to as “Project Nova,” while the transformation of the Action button into a capacitive feature is known as “Project Atlas.” Previously, “Project Bongo” was the codename used for the implementation of capacitive buttons on the remaining controls.
This development comes after a previously reported attempt to introduce capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15, which was eventually abandoned during development.
In addition to the “Capture Button,” the Action button would undergo a capacitive transformation, enhancing user interaction.
These new capacitive buttons could have pressure sensors, allowing them to respond to the force applied during a press, which could reduce accidental button activations — a common issue for smartphone users.
Moreover, the mmWave cutout, initially situated below the sleep/wake button, is rumored to be repositioned below the volume buttons on the opposite side. This change in layout would apply to devices equipped with a physical SIM slot, the report noted.
Although the credibility of this information remains uncertain due to the anonymous source, if these rumors hold true, the iPhone 16 would boast an outer frame with the highest number of elements ever.
Why It’s Important: Previously, it was reported Apple could use a new technology that would make the iPhone 16’s display brighter and more efficient at the same time.
Analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities has also offered insights into potential upgrades for the iPhone 16 Pro, which include the adoption of a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera sensor—a significant improvement from the current 12-megapixel sensor.
Pu’s research also indicates that Apple is exploring the integration of Wi-Fi 7 technology within the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.
In May, it was reported that the iPhone 16 Pro Max model could be dubbed the iPhone 16 Ultra, as it could have a larger display size.
