  • A look at the percentage of people who plan on getting boosters and the presidential candidate fighting against them.

New COVID-19 boosters have been approved by the U.S. FDA in the fight against new variants.

A new survey showed how likely people are to get new boosters and if they will have their children get boosters.

What Happened: New COVID-19 vaccine boosters could soon be available for U.S. residents, with companies like Pfizer Inc PFE, Moderna Inc MRNA and BioNTech SE - ADR BNTX having their boosters approved.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommended that anyone 6 months of age or older get a new approved booster after the recent FDA decision.

Novavax Inc NVAX has a vaccine booster waiting on approval that could help fight against new variants of COVID-19.

The approved boosters come at a time when hospitalizations related to COVID-19 have increased in recent months.

A new survey from Morning Consult found that over half of U.S. registered voters are planning on getting a COVID-19 booster vaccine this year.

Here is a look at how U.S. registered voters responded to if they planned to get a COVID-19 booster vaccine this year:

  • All Voters: 57% Yes, 43% No
  • Democrats: 79% Yes, 21% No
  • Republicans: 39% Yes, 61% No
  • Independents: 48% Yes, 52% No

Overall, 57% of all voters said they plan to get a booster, with 37% saying they “definitely” plan to get a booster. Of the 43% who said they were not planning to get a booster, 27% said they “definitely” would not.

The poll also found similar results among those surveyed when asked if their children would get the new boosters.

  • All Voters: 53% Yes, 47% No
  • Democrats: 71% Yes, 29% No
  • Republicans: 42% Yes, 58% No
  • Independents: 38% Yes, 62% No

COVID-19 Coming Back as Election Issue: The 2020 election saw the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a major talking point.

With the pandemic being over, but new variants popping up and booster vaccines approved and recommended, COVID-19 could once again be a talking point in the 2024 election.

Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is looking to increase discussion on the 2024 election campaign.

DeSantis has been critical of the way that former President Donald Trump handled the pandemic previously, calling out the handing over of leadership to Dr. Anthony Fauci.

“I fought against Fauci when he was popular,” DeSantis said in a recent interview, as reported by Semafor. “It’s easy for Republicans to ding him now because he’s unpopular with the broader electorate.”

Based on the new comments from DeSantis, it appears he could be ready to ramp up attacks on Trump and his record of handling the COVID-19 pandemic going into the 2024 election.

“Back then, Donald Trump used to cite Fauci’s poll numbers as a reason why Fauci was somebody that should be listened to.”

Many potential voters are likely familiar with the handling of the pandemic in the state of Florida where Gov. Desantis fought against vaccine rules and mask mandates.

“As the left pushes a new wave of COVID hysteria, Ron DeSantis is the only candidate with a proven record of fighting back and capable of bringing a reckoning for the wrongdoings committed,” DeSantis campaign spokesman Bryan Griffin told Semafor.

The ramped-up attacks by DeSantis come as he continued to trail Trump in election polls by a significant margin.
