IRS Special Agent Fatally Shot By Colleague At Phoenix Gun Range

Last week, an IRS special agent with significant military experience was fatally wounded by a colleague during a training session at a gun range in Phoenix, Arizona.

As per Insider on Saturday, the victim was identified as 47-year-old Patrick Bauer. The accidental shooting took place last Thursday, confirmed by a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson.

Bauer, having retired as a master sergeant from the Arizona Air National Guard, was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. “Our concern today is for the agent and their family,” said Charlotte M. Dennis, an IRS Criminal Investigation spokesperson.

The 161st Air Refueling Wing Security Forces Squadron, where Bauer served, expressed their condolences via Facebook. Bauer is survived by his wife and four children.

Investigations into the accidental shooting are currently ongoing by the FBI, with the findings to be submitted to the US Attorney’s Office, according to local affiliate ABC 15.

This incident has rekindled debates regarding the necessity of IRS agents being armed. The IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division, known for conducting potentially dangerous investigations, has been armed since its inception.
