Biden, Under Fire Over 'No Comment' Remark On Rising Hawaii Death Toll, Says Will Visit Maui 'As Soon As We Can'

President Joe Biden has come under criticism for his handling of the devastating wildfires in Maui, which have resulted in the death of at least 99 individuals. On Tuesday, Biden announced plans to visit the affected area soon.

What Happened: The president’s response to the fires, especially his “no comment” remark concerning the rising death toll, has drawn attention away from the federal relief measures he has initiated, The Hill reports.

Biden, during his recent comments, mentioned that he and the first lady, Jill Biden, would visit Maui “as soon as we can.” However, he quickly shifted his focus to the Inflation Reduction Act during a scheduled trip to Wisconsin. Olivia Dalton, the Principal deputy press secretary, indicated that the White House is in discussions about a potential visit to Hawaii, though no specific details were provided.

Former President Donald Trump criticized Biden’s response, likening it to Biden’s reaction to the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, which Biden has yet to visit. Trump labeled Biden’s response to the Maui tragedy as “disgraceful,” accusing him of neglecting the situation.

Why It Matters: The wildfires in Maui, which have claimed nearly 100 lives, have been a significant point of contention.

Previously the White House faced criticism over Biden’s vacation during the fires. In defense, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized Biden’s collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and their active role in Maui. Despite signing a disaster declaration for Hawaii and directing military aid for the wildfires, Biden’s administration has faced backlash over perceived unpreparedness and the subsequent response.

The recent wildfires in Maui are among the deadliest in U.S. history, with thousands forced to evacuate and significant destruction to properties.
