Kim Jong Un Slams Local Officials For 'Irresponsible,' 'Insensitive' Response To Typhoon Wrecking 200 Hectares of Farmland

Kim Jong Un expressed dissatisfaction with North Korean local officials over their inability to prevent damage caused by Typhoon Khanun, which recently affected the Korean Peninsula.

What Happened: During his visit to Anbyon County in Kangwon Province, Kim criticized the officials for their “irresponsible” and “insensitive” approach, which led to significant damage in the region, KCNA reported.

“He pointed out that 200-odd hectares of farmlands in Ogye-ri of Anbyon County were flooded, entirely due to extremely chronic and irresponsible work attitude of agricultural guidance organs and Party organizations in the region,” the state-owned media reported.

He further stated that the region suffered more than other typhoon-affected areas because provincial officials did not adequately implement state measures.

Why It Matters: North Korea’s vulnerability to natural disasters, stemming from its limited infrastructure, has raised significant concerns. Previous episodes of heavy rainfall have resulted in the displacement of thousands within North Korea.

The nation’s proactive approach, including the dissemination of news alerts and weather programs during typhoons, emphasizes the crucial role of disaster management within the country.

Kim’s emphasis on disaster preparedness and response is not isolated. The supreme leader has been active on various fronts, including military and international relations.

His recent actions, such as reshuffling military leadership and emphasizing the country’s defense capabilities, indicate a broader strategy to strengthen North Korea’s domestic and international position.
