Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and his alleged business dealings with son Hunter Biden.

Here’s a look at how registered voters feel about the impeachment investigation.

What Happened: President Biden’s son Hunter Biden was recently indicted and faces federal charges related to a gun he purchased and owned in 2018. Additional charges related to business taxes could still be filed against the president’s son.

On Sept. 12, McCarthy announced that Republicans in Congress had initiated an impeachment inquiry into the president, focusing on his possible dealings with his son.

A poll shows that more registered voters in America are in favor of the impeachment inquiry than against it.

Data from Morning Consult shows that 48% of registered voters support the impeachment inquiry, while 42% oppose it. The remaining 10% chose either "don't know" or "no opinion" as their response.

Here’s the breakdown by political affiliation:

  • Democrats: 36% support, 56% oppose, 9% don’t know/no opinion
  • Republicans: 63% support, 31% oppose, 6% don’t know/no opinion
  • Independents: 47% support, 36% oppose, 17% don’t know/no opinion

The poll also asked voters if they believed the impeachment inquiry was primarily evidence-based or politically motivated to harm Biden's career.

The results were:

  • All Voters: 43% evidence of wrongdoing, 41% politically motivated, 16% don’t know/no opinion
  • Democrats: 16% evidence, 66% politically motivated, 18% don’t know
  • Republicans: 74% evidence, 16% politically motivated, 10% don’t know
  • Independents: 40% evidence, 39% politically motivated, 21% don’t know

Biden continues to be among the favorites to win the election and get re-elected in 2024, but could face a rematch with former President Donald Trump, who he defeated in the 2020 election.

After mostly dominating a Morning Consult hypothetical poll against Trump, Biden was tied with the GOP frontrunner in the latest weekly poll.

Trump has been indicted multiple times in 2023 and was previously impeached twice. The former president faces multiple federal charges and has a calendar full of court appearances coinciding with his 2024 campaign.
