The 2024 presidential election could end up being a rematch of the 2020 race, which saw voters choose between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Currently serving as the 46th president, Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.

Here's a look into a weekly poll's insights on a potential face-off between the current and former presidents.

What Happened: President Biden has been the consensus nominee for the Democratic Party in the 2024 election. While some in his party have expressed concern over his age, Biden has been able to fend off the limited challenges to his bid for the Democratic Party nomination.

If Biden wins the Democratic nomination, he will likely face off against Trump or Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the two candidates that have dominated GOP polls for months.

The weekly Morning Consult poll asks registered voters who they would select in hypothetical elections of Trump vs. Biden and Biden vs. DeSantis.

Voters show a tie for Biden and Trump, with each candidate getting 42% of the vote. Eleven percent said they would vote for someone else, and five percent said they were unsure who they would select. This marked a change for Biden, who had a two-point lead in last week's poll.

In a matchup between Biden and DeSantis, Biden won with a 43% to 39% advantage. Twelve percent said they would vote for someone else and 7% said they were unsure who they would vote for. DeSantis gained one point from last week’s hypothetical poll, but continues to trail Biden.

Why It’s Important: This marks a change of pace for a poll that Biden has mostly dominated since tracking began. Biden has often led Trump by one to two percentage points in the hypothetical poll, only being beaten on one occasion.

Two weeks ago, Biden enjoyed a three-point lead over Trump, and last week, Trump had gained one point to bring Biden's lead down to two points.

The tie in the polling data comes after it was announced that Biden’s son Hunter Biden was indicted and faces federal charges over a weapon purchased in 2018.

Trump and Biden have entered a potentially pivotal time for the 2024 election, with Trump announcing he will skip the second Republican primary debate and Biden ramping up his political television advertising spend.
