Activision Blizzard Inc's ATVI recently released multiplayer-only action role-playing game, Diablo IV, experienced a disruptive DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack, causing login issues and disconnections for players during peak traffic.

As per Kotaku, an official message displayed on the game's main menu confirmed the ongoing login issues and assured players the matter was being investigated. The Battle.net customer service account tweeted an update on June 25, stating: "We are investigating the login issues affecting Diablo IV and working to resolve these as soon as possible. Players may experience queues while we work on the issue."

Later in the day, the company revealed the investigation was still underway and the game was indeed under attack by DDoS. "We are currently experiencing a DDoS attack, which may result in high latency and disconnections for some players. We are actively working to mitigate this issue," the in-game announcement read.

A DDoS attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a given server, service or network by overloading the target or its associated infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic.

Unsurprisingly, social media platforms, including the game's popular subreddit, were flooded with posts from frustrated players who wanted to play the game on a weekend morning.

After several hours of downtime, Blizzard announced the DDoS attacks ended: "The DDOS attacks that we were monitoring have ended," the company's customer service account tweeted.

Nevertheless, this incident highlights the risks of always-online games and the absence of an offline mode in Diablo IV.
