Brick-And-Mortar Retailers With The Strongest Online Sales Growth

With Black Friday a little over a week away, retailers are entering the most critical time of the year. Within the past several years, there has been a major fundamental shift in the way Americans do their holiday shopping. The emergence of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and the creation of an entire new shopping holiday, Cyber Monday, speaks to the increasing role that e-commerce is playing in today’s retail world.

Despite Amazon’s dominance in the space, a number of brick-and-mortar retailers are doing all they can to keep up. While some companies are struggling to compete, others seem to be thriving.

It's Not All E-Commerce

According to Internet Retailer’s annual top 500 list of e-commerce companies, brick-and-mortar retailers Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT), Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD), Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE: KSS) and J C Penney Company Inc (NYSE: JCP) all grew online sales by more than 20 percent in 2015.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) online sales dropped to just 12.3 percent in 2015, but the retail giant made a big splash back in August by acquiring online retailer Jet.com. From September 2015 to February 2016, Slice Intelligence reports Jet.com’s U.S. sales grew by an average of 28 percent per month.

There’s no question that online sales will play a huge role in this year’s holiday shopping season, and Amazon will likely dominate those sales. However, the five brick-and-mortar retailers mentioned above are hoping they can chip away at Amazon’s lead.
