A financial executive was convicted Thursday of enabling his boss and others to <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/06/29/three-charged-with-insider-trading-tied-to-merger-with-donald-trumps-truth-social-parent-company/">make over $22 million illegally by trading off his tips</a> ahead of the public announcement that an acquisition firm was taking former President Donald Trump's media company public.
An agitated Bruce Garelick dropped his head and repeatedly wiped his face with his hands after a jury convicted him of all charges in Manhattan federal court.
Garelick, who had testified in his defense, was convicted of tipping others in 2021 to news that the special purpose acquisition company, Digital World Acquisition Corp., or DWAC, was <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/26/business/donald-trumps-truth-social-parent-company-goes-on-volatile-ride-in-debut-definitely-the-latest-meme-stock/">merging with Trump Media &amp; Technology Group</a>. Garelick sat on DWAC's board.
His <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/04/03/business/two-plead-guilty-to-insider-trading-tied-to-trumps-truth-social-merger/">co-defendants pleaded guilty before trial</a>, admitting that they made over $22 million illegally.
The indictment against the men did not implicate Trump, who is seeking the presidency again this year as a Republican; or Trump Media &amp; Technology Group, which owns his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/truth-social-donald-trump-djt-ipo-digital-world-7437d5dcc491a1459a078195ae547987">Truth Social</a>&nbsp;platform and began trading on the NASDAQ stock market on March 26.
When the events that led to the charges took place in 2021, Garelick, of Providence, RI, was chief investment officer of the New York-based venture capital firm Rocket One Capital LLC, though he has primarily worked in the Boston area throughout his career.
The firm was owned by Michael Shvartsman of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. Shvartsman and his brother, Gerald Shvartsman of Aventura, Florida, pleaded guilty several weeks ago to insider trading charges, admitting that they made over $22 million illegally. They are scheduled to be sentenced in July.
During his testimony earlier this week, Garelick insisted that he did not possess any secrets about the potential merger when he bought securities in DWAC that eventually enabled him to earn nearly $50,000 in profits. And he said he followed the law by not sharing secrets with others.
On cross-examination, though, a prosecutor confronted him with the fact that he said, "We made $20 million dollars" after the public announcement of the merger deal.

Trump Flips On Crypto Opinion: While Trump praised the cryptocurrency market during his speech, also saying his campaign would accept crypto for donations and pro-crypto voters<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/05/38736514/donald-trump-says-you-better-vote-for-him-if-youre-pro-crypto-but-has-he-always-been-fine-"> should support him</a>, he hasn't always been supportive of cryptocurrency.
"If you like crypto in any form … if you're in favor of crypto you'd better vote for Trump," the former president said to the crowd on May 8.
Trump has been known for being vocal about a number of topics and people over the years, often sharing those opinions on social media platforms. One of the many sectors Trump has been outspoken about is the cryptocurrency sector.
In 2019, Trump spoke out about Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) and cryptocurrency.
"I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air," Trump <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1149472282584072192">tweeted </a>on July 11, 2019.
Trump also went on to call out Libra, a virtual currency that Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) was working on at the time.
"If Facebook and other companies want to become a bank, they must seek a new Banking Charter and become subject to all Banking Regulations, just like other Banks."
Trump said the real currency is the U.S. dollar, which he added would remain the "most dominant currency anywhere in the world."
Investing $1,000 in Bitcoin: On the day Trump blasted Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, the leading cryptocurrency traded between $11,158.92 and $12,144.62.
Based on the high of the day, an investor could have purchased 0.0823 BTC at the time of Trump's tweet.
That $1,000 investment would be worth $5,138.70 today based on a price of $62,438.61 for Bitcoin at the time of writing. This represents a return of 413.9%.
At its peak of $73,750.07 set in March 2024, the investment would have been worth $6,069.63, up 506.9% from the time of Trump's tweet.

Trump has now launched three NFT collections since December 2022. Many on social media were quick to point out the previous comments against cryptocurrency by the former president at the time his NFTs launched.
The price of Bitcoin soared in 2023 and 2024, rebounding from a 2022 year that saw a drop in the price due to volatility from the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/22/11/29681030/ftx-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy"> bankruptcies of several </a>cryptocurrency trading platforms.
The approval of Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 increased optimism for the crypto sector and helped kick off new all-time highs for Bitcoin months later.
Skeptics of Bitcoin such as Trump have been proven wrong over the years with the price of Bitcoin soaring to new highs and gains outpacing other assets.

The vehicle is only available in the U.S. and has a long waiting list.

While consumers might be willing to pay a little extra to get their hands on a Cybertruck, it's unclear how much one potentially wealthy Russian spent to try and smuggle in two Cybertrucks to the country.
The Lithuanian customs office <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=409391498690126&amp;t=0">shared </a>that it detained two Cybertrucks at the Salčininku checkpoint, which borders Lithuania and Belarus. As shared via a Facebook video, the customs office believes the vehicles may have been headed to Russia.
The Cybertrucks in question were made in 2023 and were among the first production units of the Tesla vehicle according to the video, as <a href="https://www.pcmag.com/news/lithuanian-customs-officials-seize-2-cybertrucks-being-smuggled-into-russia">shared </a>by PC Mag.
"It is suspected that these cars would later be transported and registered in Russia," the video post said according to a translation.
Lithuania is a member of the European Union, which currently doesn't allow passenger vehicle exports to Russia.
"A pre-trial investigation has been launched into smuggling and violation of international sanctions."
The drivers of the vehicles were released after questioning according to the post.

Why It's Important: While the Cybertruck is not for sale in Europe, Tesla will be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38483089/after-china-tesla-announces-european-tour-for-cybertruck-despite-sales-being-limited-to-us">doing a marketing tour</a> of the vehicle in May and June.
It is unknown who the vehicles may have been for and the investigation may never find out.
Russian President Vladimir Putin <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/02/37023343/theres-no-stopping-elon-musk-says-putin-in-tucker-carlson-chat-remains-non-commital-on-releasing-imp">praised Tesla CEO </a>Elon Musk in an interview with Tucker Carlson earlier this year.
"I think there's no stopping Elon Musk," Putin said.
Putin called Musk "a smart guy" and a "talented businessman."
At least one Cybertruck made its way to Russia with the owner showing the vehicle off on YouTube, according to <a href="https://www.autoevolution.com/news/tesla-cybertruck-spotted-in-moscow-russians-not-impressed-233270.html">AutoEvolution</a>.
That vehicle was brought into Russia via Belarus. The owner said the amount paid for the Cybertruck was an offer the original purchaser couldn't refuse.
