Shares of Steelcase Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCS#NYSE">SCS</a>) fell sharply in today's pre-market trading after the company reported worse-than-expected <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/09/40929014/steelcase-stock-falls-after-q2-revenue-miss-details">second-quarter revenue results</a>.
Steelcase reported quarterly earnings of 39 cents per share, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of 37 cents. Quarterly revenue of $855.8 million missed the analyst consensus estimate of $864.1 million by 0.96%.
Steelcase shares dipped 8.9% to $12.85 in pre-market trading.

Steelcase Reports Weak Sales, Joins American Healthcare REIT And Other Big Stocks Moving Lower In Thursday's Pre-Market Session

U.S. stocks look set for a relief rally after the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/40909187/s-p-500-briefly-hits-record-high-just-ahead-of-fed-rate-cut-extends-7-day-winning-streak-tuesday">market failed to sustain the upward momentum</a> set in motion by the 50 basis-point cut announced by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday. The index futures point to a sharply higher opening on Thursday. Given the central bank&#8217;s focus on labor market statistics, traders may closely monitor the weekly jobless claims data. The results of a regional manufacturing survey and the Conference Board&#8217;s leading economic index may also create some ripples in the market.
With the Fed decision on the back-burner, earnings could get back to the spotlight, with FedEx Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDX#NYSE">FDX</a>) due to report after the close. Tech and small-cap stocks remain poised to rally out of the gates even as most strategists warn of a tech rally cool-off. Volatility is on the wane amid the risk-on mood, with the CBOE Volatility Index, aka VIX, down about 9%.

In premarket trading on Thursday,&nbsp;the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) jumped 1.55% to $570.08 and the&nbsp;Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) gained 2.00% to $480.96, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro data</a>.
Cues From Last Session:
Wall Street closed Wednesday&#8217;s session modestly lower despite the Fed obliging with the magnitude of the cut the market was hoping for. The major indices resigned themselves to the pattern typical of a Fed decision day and moved sideways until the announcement was made. The central bank delivered and traders indulged in strong buying that took the S&amp;P 500 Index to a new intraday high. 
The dot plot suggested policymakers will likely cut rates a 25 basis points at each of the next two decisions and by at least another percentage point in 2025. While the growth outlook was left unchanged, the unemployment rate forecasts were revised. But Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8217;s cautious comments at the press conference spooked the market, sending stocks lower in late-afternoon trading.

Insights From Analysts:
It could be time for defensives and small-caps to shine, now that the rate-cutting cycle has begun and the door is open for more.
LPL Financial Chief Equity Strategist Jeff Buchbinder said in a note ahead of the rate cut that value stocks outperform their growth counterparts three and six months after the initial cut. The 1995 monetary policy is the most analogous to the current one, he said, adding that during the 12 months after the cut at that time, growth stocks were slightly better. But value stocks have an edge over the first six months, he said.
Defensive sectors typically outperform in the six months after the initial rate cuts, and this was particularly evident during the 1995 period that saw a soft landing and technology buildout, the strategist said. Specifically, the defense and the telecom services sector were top performers, while consumer staples and utilities also outperformed, he said. Financials did well in the 1995 cycle and performed in-line in the 2019 period, which is more comparable to the current situation than the 2001 cycle, he added.
Surprisingly, the technology sector underperformed the S&amp;P 500 after the 1995 rate cut, even though the internet buildout was in its early phases, Buchbinder said, referring to Netscape&#8217;s initial public offering which came after the first rate cut. Netscape is credited with creating the first internet browser.
&#8220;The takeaway here is that the technology sector, which as we know, is in a major buildout phase now with artificial intelligence, may not get a performance bump from a more accommodating Fed,&#8221; the strategist said.
Carson Group Chief Market Strategist Ryan Detrick pointed out a positive data point that bodes well for the market. In a post on X, he said the Fed has cut rates with stocks near all-time highs 20 times in the past. In all the instances, the S&amp;P 500 was higher a year later.

The major Asian averages gained notably on Thursday, as they reacted to the Fed&#8217;s largesse, with Japan benefiting from the yen&#8217;s modest weakening against the greenback. European stocks were on a firmer footing in early Thursday, with traders in the region awaiting the Bank of England&#8217;s rate decision. The Monetary Policy Committee of the central bank is widely expected to keep rates unchanged at 5.25% although signaling reductions in the future.

On Tuesday, a stronger-than-expected increase in August retail sales set in motion a strong buying wave, which, however, could not be sustained in the afternoon session. As a result, the major indices ended narrowly mixed. The S&amp;P 500 rose for a seven straight session, hitting an intra-day high amid the early buying. The broader gauge, however, came off the high and ended marginally higher. It is now at its best level since Aug. 23.

Insights From Analysts:
Offering his take on the focus of the market, Scott Merkle, managing partner of SLB Capital Advisors, said a cut is locked in, and the &#8220;market will now turn its attention to deciphering the meaning of a 25 basis point versus a 50 basis point reduction.&#8221; The strategist expects a reduction by 25 basis points from the 5.25%-5.50% level where the Fed funds rate is currently.  
&#8220;The Fed is likely to start small to provide an opportunity to adjust in future periods,&#8221; he said, adding that lower rates will reinvigorate M&amp;A activity, the sale-leaseback market and lower financing costs.
LPL Financial Chief Technical Strategist Adam Turnquist said, that in the last nine major rate hiking cycles since the 1970s, the S&amp;P 500 has generated mixed, modest returns over the three months following the first cut, with 12-month average and median returns of 5.5% and 10.8%, respectively.
The 12-month maximum drawdowns following the first cut have been around 19%–20%, larger declines than the average maximum drawdown for all years since 1974 of 14.4%, he added. &#8220;How the economy holds up and if we enter or avoid a recession will ultimately dictate how stocks perform over the longer term,&#8221; he added.

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed some improvement in the overall market sentiment, but the index remained in the &#8220;Neutral&#8221; zone on Tuesday.
U.S. stocks settled mixed on Tuesday, with the S&amp;P 500 closing the session near the flatline after surging to a record high. Major indices recorded gains last week, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining 4% and the Nasdaq adding 5.9%. The Dow also climbed 2.6% last week.
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its policy decision on Wednesday and is widely expected to cut interest rates.
Compass Minerals International, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMP#NYSE">CMP</a>) shares jumped 21% on Tuesday after the company announced preliminary third-quarter revenue above estimates. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) shares gained 2.7% after the company announced a strategic collaboration with AWS to help advance US-based chip manufacturing.
On the economic data front, U.S. retail sales rose 0.1% month-over-month in August compared to a revised 1.1% gain in July, topping market estimates of a 0.2% decline. The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index climbed to 41 in September versus 39 in the prior month. Total business inventories rose by 0.4% month-over-month in July compared to a 0.3% gain in June, topping market expectations of a 0.3% increase.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with consumer discretionary, energy, and industrials stocks recording the biggest gains on Tuesday. However, healthcare and consumer staples stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 16 points to 41,606.18 on Tuesday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.03% to 5,634.58, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.20% at 17,628.06 during Tuesday's session.

A company with a favorable efficiency level is expected to provide stellar returns as it is believed to be positively correlated with price performance. In fact, efficiency level, which measures a company&#39;s capability to transform available input into output, is often considered an important parameter for gauging its potential to make profits.
However, at times, it becomes difficult to measure the efficiency level of a company. This is why one must consider popular efficiency ratios while selecting stocks.
These efficiency ratios are:
Receivables Turnover:&nbsp; This is the ratio of 12-month sales to four-quarter average receivables. It shows a company&#39;s potential to extend its credit and collect debt in terms of that credit. A high receivables turnover ratio or the &quot;accounts receivable turnover ratio&quot; or &quot;debtor&#39;s turnover ratio&quot; is desirable as it shows that the company is capable of collecting its accounts receivables or that it has quality customers.
Asset Utilization: This ratio indicates a company&#39;s capability to convert assets into output and is thus a widely known measure of efficiency level. It is calculated by dividing total sales over the past 12 months by the last four-quarter average of total assets. Like the above ratios, high asset utilization may indicate that a company is efficient.
Inventory Turnover: The ratio of the 12-month cost of goods sold (COGS) to a four-quarter average inventory is considered one of the most popular efficiency ratios. It indicates a company&#39;s ability to maintain a suitable inventory position. While a high value indicates that the company has a relatively low level of inventory compared to COGS, a low value indicates that the company is facing declining sales, which has resulted in excess inventory.
Operating Margin: This efficiency measure is the ratio of operating income over the past 12 months to sales over the same period. It measures a company&#39;s ability to control operating expenses. Hence, a high value of the ratio may indicate that the company manages its operating expenses more efficiently than its peers.

The company expects to report earnings per share of between&nbsp;$0.33&nbsp;to&nbsp;$0.37&nbsp;for the&nbsp;second quarter&nbsp;of fiscal 2025 and adjusted earnings per share of between&nbsp;$0.36&nbsp;to&nbsp;$0.40. The company reported earnings per share of&nbsp;$0.23&nbsp;and adjusted earnings per share of&nbsp;$0.31&nbsp;in the&nbsp;second quarter&nbsp;of fiscal 2024.
