Here&#8217;s a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/04/g38505839/transocean-ltd-reports-first-quarter-2024-results">rundown of the report</a>.
What To Know: Transocean reported first-quarter revenue of $763 million, which missed the consensus estimate of $787.043 million, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>. The company reported an adjusted earnings loss of 3 cents per share, which beat estimates for a loss of 14 cents per share. 
&#8220;Over the first months of 2024, Transocean has achieved some fairly significant milestones. First, we secured a 365-day extension on&nbsp;Deepwater Asgard&nbsp;at a rate of&nbsp;$505,000&nbsp;per day, once again demonstrating the sustained tightness in the high-specification floater market as well as Transocean&#8217;s ability to command industry-leading dayrates,&#8221; said Jeremy Thigpen, CEO of Transocean.
&#8220;Additionally, earlier this month we finalized a&nbsp;$1.8&nbsp;billion&nbsp;debt refinancing transaction, enabling us to improve near-term liquidity and start the process of simplifying our balance sheet.&#8221;
Operating and maintenance expenses totaled&nbsp;$523&nbsp;million, compared with&nbsp;$569&nbsp;million&nbsp;in the prior quarter. Transocean said the sequential decrease was primarily due to cost savings on rigs that were idle in the&nbsp;first quarter, reduced contract preparation expenses and lower in-service maintenance costs.
&#8220;Looking ahead, we remain encouraged by the demand&nbsp;outlook&nbsp;and expect to see numerous long-term contracts awarded over the next several months,&#8221; Thigpen added.
Following the print, Benchmark analyst Kurt Hallead reiterated Transocean with a Buy rating and maintained a price target of&nbsp;$8.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a surprise visit to China over the weekend. The EV maker on Sunday announced that&nbsp;Chinese authorities removed restrictions&nbsp;on Tesla vehicles after the company passed data security requirements in China. Tesla is expected to partner with Baidu for mapping and navigation capabilities in the country.

Wedbush analyst&nbsp;Dan Ives&nbsp;called the announcement a &#8220;watershed moment&#8221; for Tesla. 
"Musk winning FSD approval in the key China market is a watershed moment for the Tesla story in our view. This news will be a major focus from investors this morning as it shows how close the FSD vision in China is to becoming a reality for Tesla,&#8221; Ives said.
The news comes less than a week after Tesla shares surged higher in the wake of the company&#8217;s first-quarter results. 
Despite missing analyst estimates on the top and bottom lines, Tesla shares got a lift from the company's accelerated timeline for the launch of new models and talk about the development of a next-gen vehicle. Musk also downplayed the quarter and reiterated his vision for the future of Tesla around AI, full self-driving and robotaxis.
&#8220;If somebody doesn&#8217;t believe&nbsp;Tesla&#8217;s going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company,&#8221;&nbsp;Musk said on the call. "We will, and we are."

Tenstreet held its 6th annual User Conference in Las Vegas earlier this month, an event aimed at providing industry education, unveiling new features, and connecting with customers.

For Tenstreet CEO Tim Crawford, it's the ability to meet with clients in person that makes the conference worthwhile. 

"It is always great to interact with our clients in person" Crawford said. "Zoom calls are great, but there is really no substitute to seeing people face-to-face."

The Tenstreet User Conference stands out because of its focus on building stronger bonds with existing customers. The event is all about growing relationships through in-depth exploration of the company's newest offerings.

Tenstreet unveiled a total of 35 new features at this month's conference, including a wide array of solutions designed to provide both pre-hire and post-hire support for users. Over the past year, Crawford and other leaders at the company have spent a significant amount of time thinking about how humans can work alongside emerging technologies to create a better connection between drivers and carriers. Tenstreet's newest features reflect that focus. 

Tenstreet announced multiple new offerings aimed at making its messaging tools smarter. The company aims to enable stronger human connections between carriers and drivers while simultaneously leveraging emerging generative AI technologies to streamline communication.

While human connection and generative AI may seem contradictory at first glance, Crawford explained the power of AI to bring people together in more meaningful ways than ever before. When carriers use AI solutions to handle straightforward communication tasks like answering frequently asked questions, they free their human employees up to engage in more nuanced and purposeful conversations. 

Generative AI solutions provide an easy way for drivers to gather routine information without needing to speak to another person. When those driver requests become more layered and complex, however, that is where humans can step in and take over the conversation. 

"We wanted the technology to be like an escalator" Crawford said. "Escalators never really break, they just turn into stairs" emphasizing the importance of using technology to bolster human relationships, not undermine them. Every AI-powered solution Tenstreet develops is designed with that goal in mind, from pre-hire applicant screening solutions to post-hire driver communication tools. 

At the end of the day, Crawford understands that drivers want to join – and stay – with carriers that make them feel connected on a deeply human level from the very beginning.

"We believe the most successful carriers will be the ones that lean into human connection. It is all about intent and how the technology gets positioned" Crawford said. "The application paths with early human connections are by far more successful for both carriers and drivers. We are trying to build on that, not move away from it."

VIZIO Holding Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VZIO#NYSE">VZIO</a>) shares are trading lower Tuesday after Walmart (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) received a request for additional information from the FTC regarding its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/02/37132583/walmart-vizio-deal-a-potential-boon-or-bane-for-roku-analysts-sound-off-before-q4-e">planned merger with Vizio</a>.
What To Know: In February, Vizio entered into an agreement to be acquired by Walmart for $11.50 per share in cash.
On March 25, Walmart held discussions with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and notified the antitrust agencies that it would voluntarily withdraw and refile reports for the merger in order to give the agencies additional time to review the merger. Walmart then refiled the notification and reports on March 29.
In a new regulatory filing, Vizio announced that the company and Walmart received a request from the FTC for additional information in connection with its review of the merger. The second request extends the waiting period until 30 days after both companies have complied with the second request. 
Vizio and Walmart said they expect to &#8220;promptly respond&#8221; to the second request and will continue working cooperatively with the FTC as it continues to conduct its review of the merger.

<div>Modest growth in domestic e-commerce volumes plus improved aircraft utilization from network rebalancing helped Canadian airline Cargojet further stabilize performance during the first quarter, setting the table for growth this year despite lingering concerns about inflation. </div>

Cargojet (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cgjtf#OTC">CGJTF</a>) reported Tuesday that revenue of US$169 million was nearly flat year over year, while adjusted earnings excluding accounting measures and taxes ticked up 3.6% to $57 million, in line with analysts' expectations.

The company said less hesitancy among consumers to make online purchases helped drive up flying revenue — divided among its core domestic network, dedicated contract flying for other airlines and all-in charter services — by 6.5% to $132.4 million. The gains were offset by lower fuel surcharges as the price of jet fuel came down in the past year. 

Cargo airlines typically see better results in the second half of the year as importers and exporters ramp up goods movement for the holiday shopping season and year-end financial targets, but management offered a conservative outlook as high prices for goods and services weigh on Canadians' purchasing power.  <script type="text/javascript">

"On the domestic side, the volumes from our major customers have stabilized and improved sequentially each quarter since the middle of last year" said co-CEO Jamie Porteous during an earnings presentation for analysts. "Given the macroeconomic environment of persistent inflation, and high interest rates, a much greater portion of household income is still being spent on borrowing costs, leaving a smaller portion for discretionary spending. As a result, we do not expect significant growth to return until financial conditions ease significantly for consumers." 

January and February volumes exceeded expectations but softened in March.  The positive direction in Cargojet's business mirrors the continuing signs of stabilization in the broader airfreight market, with global demand up about 12% in the first quarter versus the same period last year. It also compares favorably with UPS, which noted in its earnings last week that average daily parcel volumes declined in Canada.

Cargojet operates a domestic overnight express network between 16 major Canadian cities primarily for express shippers such as Amazon (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Canada Post, FedEx (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fdx#NYSE">FDX</a>) and UPS (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ups#NYSE">UPS</a>), as well as dedicated routes for DHL Express and ad hoc charters utilizing a fleet of 41 Boeing 757 and 767 freighters. Large domestic customers typically pay upfront for fixed allocations, with extra space taken by international airlines that need a hub connection and freight forwarders. 

Under dedicated fly-only contracts, the aircraft lease and crew services are bundled, leaving customers in charge of setting the schedule, filling the aircraft with cargo, fueling and airport services. Porteous said Cargojet operated 17 aircraft for DHL Express in the two previous quarters, two more than specified in the contract, and they have been extended at least through the second quarter of this year.  <script type="text/javascript">

Moves last year to streamline the domestic network, such as substituting a larger 767 for two 757s on certain routes, are paying off in higher load factors and profit margins being sustained in the mid-30% range. Cargojet's flight hours during the quarter were down 16% year over year, but revenue per flight hour was up 18%, said Porteous.

Other efficiency measures also helped prevent cost increases. Better maintenance planning, for example, allows for lower inventories of spare parts and shorter turnaround times for aircraft. Flight simulators acquired last year have reduced pilot downtime and cut travel and hotel costs because pilots no longer have to be flown to Dallas or Miami for training. And Cargojet has reduced reliance on subcontractors for outsourced charter flights.

With the cost base per flight hour now locked in, any new volumes will likely mean revenues will drop to the bottom line, analysts say.

<h2 id="h-777-change-of-heart">777 change of heart</h2>

Cargojet said it pocketed a net gain of $13.4 million from the sale of four Boeing 777-200s along with a 777 simulator and a Beechcraft aircraft it planned to use for crew transport for $95.5 million. The proceeds are being used to pay down debt and buy back shares. The company originally planned to expand into long-haul intercontinental service with the addition of eight 777 passenger aircraft acquired on the secondary market and converted into maindeck freighters but abandoned the strategy when the air cargo market soured in 2022 and 2023. It sold three 777-300s last year and in January sold the production slots for the 777-200 conversions. 

But after initially planning to offload four surplus 757s, Cargojet in February said it would continue using two of them because of increased customer needs. On Monday, the company said one of the freighters is being held for sale after undergoing an engine refresh, while the other is in reserve and being used for flex capacity as needed.

Porteous said the all-cargo carrier has plenty of capacity in its domestic and international contract flying segments to grow revenue by 15% to 20% per year without adding more aircraft. 

Management said added time and operational costs from ocean carriers diverting from use of the Suez Canal because of attacks by pro-Iranian rebels in Yemen has increased demand for aircraft. Revenue for charters provided on a short-term or trip basis grew 24% and remains strong in April, according to executives.

<h3>Best Week for &quot;Magnificent Seven&quot; Since November</h3>
The batch of tech giants known as the &quot;Magnificent Seven&quot; regained some of its momentum at the end of the week, following positive earnings reports from Google-parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/googl#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/msft#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>).
Alphabet which gained 11.3% last week on the back of upbeat earnings, became the fourth U.S. company to reach the $2-trillion market cap milestone. On the other hand, Facebook-parent Meta (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/meta#NASDAQ">META</a>) offered downbeat revenue guidance and saw shares slumping 9.4% last week. Tesla TSLA gained 19.7% on future affordable EV plans despite the Q1 miss.
Most tech companies&#39; promise to spend big on the AI revolution boosted the NVIDIA (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nvda#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) stock, which jumped 12.3% last week. Meanwhile, MSFT, Amazon (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) recorded modest gains of 1.6%, 1.5% and 2.1%, respectively.

<h3>U.S. Economic Growth Slowed in Q1</h3>
The U.S. economy expanded at the slowest pace in two years, with GDP rising 1.6% annually in the first quarter, missing Wall Street expectations of a 2.4% increase. The growth reflects a clear slowdown from the 3.4% increase in the fourth quarter of 2023 and was also much lower than the 4.9% reported in the year-ago quarter.
<h3>U.S. Core PCE Inflation Rises Faster Than Expected</h3>
U.S. inflation, as measured by the change in the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, rose to 2.7% on a yearly basis in March from 2.5% in February. This reading came in above the market expectation of 2.6%.
The core PCE Price Index, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, held steady at 2.8% on a yearly basis, surpassing analysts&#39; estimate of 2.6%.On a monthly basis, the PCE Price Index and the core PCE Price Index both rose 0.3%.
Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index surged 3.7% year over year in the first quarter. This topped estimates of 3.4% and marked a substantial increase from the 2% gain in the previous quarter. This surge in inflation raised doubts about the sooner-than-expected U.S. interest rate cuts.
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.70% on Apr 25, 2024, marking the first time since early November. However, the yield closed the week at 4.67%. Markets are now pricing in only one interest rate cut this year, reflecting a significant shift from the earlier projections. Powell&#39;s recent statements, which stress the need for &quot;greater confidence&quot; in the decline of inflation before considering rate cuts, also reinforced this sentiment.

We are in the middle of the first-quarter earnings season. This week is the second busiest of this reporting cycle, as nearly 1,300 companies are slated to report their quarterly financial numbers. Earnings results are so far better than expected.
Among the corporate giants lined up to report this week, quite a few returned more than the market&#39;s benchmark &mdash; the S&amp;P 500 Index &mdash; in the last quarter. As of Apr 26, 229 companies on the S&amp;P 500 Index reported their financial numbers. Total earnings for these index members are up 2.8% from the same period last year on 3.3% higher revenues, with 78.2% beating EPS estimates and 59.8% beating revenue estimates.
At present, total earnings of the S&amp;P 500 Index in first-quarter 2024 are expected to be up 3.8% on 3.7% higher revenues. This follows the 6.8% earnings growth on 4% higher revenues in fourth-quarter 2023 and 3.8% earnings growth on 2.2% higher revenues in third-quarter 2023.

Further, LPLA&#39;s recruiting efforts, strategic acquisitions (Allen &amp; Company and FRGIS, minority stake in Independent Advisor Alliance and planned deal to buy Atria Wealth Solutions) and solid advisor productivity are expected to keep supporting it.
