Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) cut its annual EV production target reportedly due to a miscommunication earlier this year with Atlanta-based supplier Essex Furukawa.
What Happened: Essex Furukawa supplies Rivian with copper windings used in the company&#8217;s electric vehicle motors. Rivian miscalculated when communicating supply and demand needs with Essex earlier this year, according to a <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-07/rivian-misstep-triggered-parts-shortage-hobbling-its-ev-output">report </a>from Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. Essex subsequently committed to supporting other customers.
Essex was Rivian&#8217;s sole supplier for copper windings. Though Rivian has now identified other suppliers to provide it with replacements, the cost is high, the report said.
Rivian did not immediately respond to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga&#8217;s</a> request for comment.
Why It Matters: Rivian cut its annual production forecast last week by as much as 18% to between 47,000 and 49,000 electric vehicles, sending the stock on a downward spiral. 
The company cited production disruption owing to a component shortage for the revised guidance. The component, it said, is used in both the company&#8217;s R1 vehicles and its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/esg/24/08/40512436/rivian-hits-rough-patch-production-halts-leadership-shake-ups-dent-stock">commercial vans</a>. 
&#8220;This supply shortage impact began in Q3 of this year, has become more acute in recent weeks and continues,&#8221;&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/10/41182921/rivians-production-forecast-hits-bump-supply-shortage-sends-shares-tumbling">company said</a>, without giving more details.

The second Category 5 storm of the 2024 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/24/10/41215820/hurricane-milton-is-floridas-second-storm-in-two-weeks-how-disney-theme-parks-insurance-companies-co">hurricane season named Hurricane Milton </a>is threatening large-scale destruction, as it quickly graduated from Category 1 status and is approaching the state of Florida. The storm is expected to lash over the Tampa Bay on Wednesday.
Milton Vs. Previous Hurricanes: Hurricane Milton gathered maximum sustained wind speeds of 180 miles per hour by Monday night, and in terms of wind speed it only trails a 1980 hurricane, which went by the name Allen and boasted a top wind speed of 190 mph before it made landfall in the U.S.-Mexican border,<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/07/weather/hurricane-milton-forecast-path.html"> said</a> New York Times.
Going by pressure &#8211; which is another measure of a storm&#8217;s intensity, Milton is similar to Hurricane Wilma from the 2005 hurricane season that holds the record for the lowest pressure, the Times said.
The latest<a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT4+shtml/080541.shtml"> update</a> issued by the National Hurricane Center early Tuesday showed Milton weakening to a Category 4 storm with wind speed slowing to 155 mph. The hurricane was moving east at 9 mph and was located 585 miles southwest of Tampa.
Milton is expected to regain Category 5 strength Tuesday morning and maintain this strength through the day, CNN&#8217;s <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/weather/live-news/hurricane-milton-florida-10-08-24/index.html">update </a>showed. It would then fluctuate in intensity before making landfall on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm.
Certified Consulting Meteorologist and NBC 6 South Florida John Morales, while on air, was overwhelmed with emotion as he described the hurricane. &#8220;It&#8217;s just an incredible, incredible, incredible hurricane. It has dropped 50 millibars in 10 hours,&#8221; he said before pausing to suppress his emotion. &#8220;I apologize. This is just horrific,&#8221; he said. Sharing a video clip of this, CNN media analyst Brian Stelter said, &#8220;NBC6&#8217;s @JohnMoralesTV is the longest-tenured TV meteorologist in South Florida. Florida&#8217;s Preparedness: The Sunshine State is on full alert with multiple teams coordinating to prepare ahead of Milton&#8217;s landfall. At a Monday briefing, Florida&#8217;s emergency management director, Kevin Guthrie called out to people to be prepared, ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/ahead-hurricane-strike-floridians-plan-supply-kit-heed-114571554">said.</a> &#8220;If they have called an evacuation order, I beg you, I implore you to evacuate,&#8221; he reportedly said.
Jaime Hernandez, the emergency management director in Hollywood, Florida, reportedly asked people to be ready with a plan taking into account the changing forecasts, have an emergency kit and stay informed,
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said, &#8220;Evacuations are underway, and we have suspended tolls and opened roadway shoulders to make it easier for Floridians to get to safety.&#8221; He directed people to take evacuate to pet-friendly shelters, special needs shelters, and other options that are safe from storm surges in their own counties.

Florida&#8217;s phosphate industry is one of the major suppliers of the mineral internationally, and the U.S. ranks third in terms of phosphate production, after China and Morocco. In the U.S., phosphate mining takes place in Florida, North Carolina, Idaho and Utah, <a href="https://fipr.floridapoly.edu/about-us/phosphate-primer/other-phosphate-deposits.php#:~:text=Currently%20U.S.%20phosphate%20mining%20takes,it%20was%20not%20economically%20practical.">according</a> to the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute, FIPRI.

Florida Phosphate Council <a href="https://floridaphosphate.com/our-industry/">states</a> that the phosphate industry in the state is a major economic driver and supports nearly 8,400 direct jobs. The industry accounts for an estimated $5.03 billion in annual economic output.
Josh Linville, Director of Fertilizer at integrated trading platform StoneX, said the phosphate market could be hurt. In an X post, he said, &#8220;FL is built to withstand hurricanes&#8230;to an extent. This looks bad. This looks really bad,&#8221; he said.
Even if production facilities withstand major damage, they need workers to run the plants, he added.

Nasdaq Set to Launch PureStream in Europe, Enhancing Access to EU Shares in 2025

The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday raised objections to bankrupt EV maker Fisker&#8216;s liquidation plan on behalf of the auto safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), noting that automakers cannot charge customers for repairs of safety-related issues identified with their vehicles. 
What Happened: The DOJ&#8217;s court filing dated Oct. 7 noted that an auto manufacturer must remedy any safety issues identified with their vehicles at no cost to the customer. 
Fisker, the filing noted, has identified five safety-related issues, three of which were fixed by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39305632/nearly-bankrupt-fisker-to-recall-over-18-000-ocean-suvs-across-north-america-and-europe">over-the-air software updates</a>, and the remaining two that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39547015/fisker-recalls-over-8-000-ocean-suvs-in-us-over-4-000-vehicles-in-canada-and-europe-over-faulty-door">require physical repairs</a>.
The liquidation plan put forth by Fisker, the filing said, puts the onus of covering labor expenses for the physical repairs on the drivers. The vehicle owners might be reimbursed at some point in the future, as per the plan. Charging customers, however, is in violation of the provisions of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, the DOJ noted. 
Why It Matters: Earlier this week, it was reported that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41204011/bankrupt-ev-maker-fisker-under-us-sec-investigation-for-potential-securities-law-violation">also raised objections</a> to Fisker&#8217;s liquidation plan. 
The SEC said that it has an ongoing police and regulatory interest in Fisker's books and records and may need to request or subpoena additional documents in the future. The liquidation plan put forth by the company in September, however, does not specify which books and records will be transferred to whom, the regulator alleged.
Fisker filed for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/06/39371181/troubled-ev-startup-fisker-files-for-bankruptcy-joining-lordstown-and-arrival-elon-musk-says-default" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bankruptcy in June</a>&nbsp;after burning through cash in an attempt to scale production and sales of its Ocean SUV. You figure it out," he says, emphasizing how his parents instilled a sense of self-reliance in him. This philosophy laid the groundwork for the entrepreneurial spirit that would later define Cuban's career.
At just 12 years old, Cuban's knack for hustling emerged when he took on his first sales gig.
"Literally, I would go door to door and be like, ‘Hi. My name is Mark. Do you use trash bags? I killed it,'" he remembers proudly. That door-to-door hustle quickly taught him valuable lessons about resilience, communication, and the importance of seizing opportunities.

"And, you know, just that attitude. I mean, I sold baseball cards, bought and sold stamps once, you know, when I was going door to door and I realized that it wasn&#8217;t anything horrific," he explains.

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed a decline in the overall market sentiment, but the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Monday.
U.S. stocks settled lower on Monday, with the Dow Jones index dipping around 400 points during the session amid higher Treasury yields. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield topped 4% for the first time since August.
Data released Friday showed the U.S. economy added 254,000 jobs in September, compared to a revised 159,000 gain in August, and topping market estimates of 147,000. The unemployment rate declined to 4.1% in September from 4.2% in the previous month. U.S. stock recorded gains last week, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining 0.22% and the Dow adding 0.09%. The Nasdaq, meanwhile, added 0.1% last week.
The Federal Reserve will release minutes from its recent meeting on Wednesday, while data on the consumer price index will be released on Thursday.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with consumer discretionary, utilities, and communication services stocks recording the biggest losses on Monday. However, energy stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 399 points to 41,954.24 on Monday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.96% to 5,695.94, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 1.18% to close at 17,923.90 during Monday's session.

At a current reading of 70.5, the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Monday, versus a prior reading of 73.6.

The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greediness.
