Uranium prices have more support now than they did when the nuclear fuel hit its all-time high in 2007, according to the chief executive <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/uranium">of uranium explorer</a> Madison Metals Inc. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MMTLF#OTC">MMTLF</a>).
Back then, when uranium reached a record high above $130 per pound, physical supply was tight because of flooding at two major mines, falling recoveries from old nuclear warheads, expectations of a nuclear renaissance and the launch of uranium futures in New York.
But the high price proved to be a bubble, quickly falling as end users stopped buying and financial services companies sold the metal. Later, in 2011, a disaster at a Japanese nuclear reactor sent the uranium market into a deep slump for years as nations shut down nuclear reactors.
The underlying fundamentals are "dramatically different" now, CEO Duane Parnham told Benzinga.

The tables have indeed turned. Around 60 reactors are under construction around the world, and an additional 110 are planned, according to the World Nuclear Association. That's in sharp contrast to the 65 reactors that, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, were shut down or didn't have their life spans extended between 2011 and 2020.
The threat of climate change has helped temper opposition from environmentalists concerned about safety and waste. At the United Nations climate conference last year, 22 nations pledged to triple nuclear generation by 2050 from a 2020 baseline.
The energy transition away from fossil fuels toward net zero emissions though electrification means there will be a much greater need for carbon-free power generation, and wind and solar currently aren't able to meet base load power generation requirements.
"Nuclear really became the solution to that," Parnham said. "It's becoming more accepted."
According to a base case scenario from the World Nuclear Association, global demand from reactors could hit almost 130,000 metric tons by 2040, up substantially from the estimated demand of about 65,650 metric tons this year. But by 2040 supply from existing, prospective or planned mines or those now under development may total less than 80,000 metric tons, the group said.
"We've really got to start developing mines now," Parnham said.
Mine development and exploration has been underfunded because of the longtime slump in uranium prices, which dipped below $20 a pound in 2016.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, uranium purchases from investors and trading firms have become "significant," Parnham said.&nbsp;
On top of utilities buying uranium for reactors and governments making purchases for strategic stockpiles, demand from financial services companies "dries up what little supply is out there," he said.
One of the most prominent examples is the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SRUUF#OTC">SRUUF</a>), which is an exchange traded fund that sells shares backed by physical uranium held in storage. Since its inception in 2021, the fund has amassed nearly 64 million pounds of uranium.
The buying from the financial market creates price volatility because the financial players will "flood the market" when prices start to come down, he said.&nbsp;
There may come a time when so much financial services money is entering the uranium market that governments will have to step in with regulation, but "we're a ways away from that," he said.
In the meantime, the higher uranium price is spurring merger and acquisition activity among uranium miners, as acquisitions offer the quickest way to grow, he said.&nbsp;
Indeed, recent merger and acquisition activity in the uranium space has included Premier American Uranium Inc.&nbsp;(OCT: PAUIF) and American Future Fuel Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AFFCF#OTC">AFFCF</a>); Boss Energy Ltd. (BQSSF) and enCore Energy Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EU#NASDAQ">EU</a>); ATHA Energy Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SASKF#OTC">SASKF</a>) and Latitude Uranium Inc. and 92 Energy; and IsoEnergy Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ISENF#OTC">ISENF</a>) and Consolidated Uranium Inc.
"Pricing does motivate M and A," Parnham said.

TORONTO—Two trends are converging to put North American <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/03/37895748/uranium-prices-drop-as-analysts-set-new-market-expectations-major-producers-issue-warnings">uranium miners</a> in a sweet spot.
The first is the push from United States politicians to loosen America's dependency on uranium from Russia after it invaded Ukraine. The second is the renaissance the nuclear industry is experiencing amid the push to decarbonize electricity generation. That all comes against a backdrop of underinvestment among uranium producers for years, as nuclear power fell out of favor after a power plant disaster in Japan.
Even with a recent pullback from a 16-year high hit earlier this year, uranium prices are still nearly three times what they were three years ago.
Uranium is an environmentally friendly source of electricity as the world shifts to electric vehicles, the electrification of many industries and emerging artificial intelligence applications,&nbsp;Patricia Mohr, commodity market specialist with&nbsp;Mohr &amp; Co. Critical Metals Inc.&nbsp;said during <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLHHqcp7E3o">a Benzinga virtual event</a> Tuesday.
"Nuclear is a very good option," she said.
In response to expected demand, uranium miners including Energy Fuels Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN: UUUU), Denison Mines Corp. (NYSEAMERICAN: DNN), Uranium Energy Corp. (NYSEAMERICAN: UEC), Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN: URG) and IsoEnergy Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ISENF#OTC">ISENF</a>)&nbsp;are ramping up production capacity.

While the announcements may put a damper on near-term uranium pricing, many producers will still be able to benefit from selling more volumes, Mohr said.
With those tailwinds, which have helped push uranium prices sharply higher, uranium producers gathered in Toronto last month during the Prospectors &amp; Developers Association of Canada conference and trade show to talk about their projects and outlook for the radioactive metal.&nbsp;

One of the factors helping keep uranium prices elevated is a worry that there isn't enough long-term supply out there to meet future demand.
"Exploring, finding and developing uranium projects takes a long time," Stephen Roman, CEO of Toronto-based Global Atomic, said during a presentation at the trade show.
The company is working to advance its Dasa project in the African nation of Niger, which according to the World Nuclear Association has the highest-grade uranium ores of any African country and supplies about 5% of the world's mined output of the metal.
"This is one of the top projects in Africa," Roman said.
The deposit, which is located about 65 miles southeast of the mining town of Arlit, is in an area that has been producing uranium for more than half a century.
"All the infrastructure is there, the power the water, etc.," Roman said. "This mine will be very profitable. This is going to be a mine that is going to run for 40 years or more."
Global Atomic expects its Dasa mine to be completed by June and has offtake agreements in place, including one with a large European utility, he said.&nbsp;
Energy Fuels Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN: UUUU)
Through March, this Colorado-based company sold 300,000 pounds of uranium, and it is restarting mines that were shuttered during times of lower uranium prices.
"We're back in mining mode," CEO Mark Chalmers said in his presentation.
After the company mines the ore, it will stockpile it at its mill in Utah, but the question remains open when it will start processing that ore.&nbsp;
Energy Fuels has also been diversifying into vanadium, which is used in the steel industry, and rare earths element production. The United States has designated vanadium and rare earth elements as critical minerals.
&#8220;We are creating a profitable, high-margin critical mineral company on the back of the uranium business," Chalmers said. "Uranium will always be our core position."
Uranium Energy Corp. (NYSEAMERICAN: UEC)
This Texas-based company is advancing projects in Canada, Wyoming and Texas.&nbsp;
CEO Amir Adnani said in his presentation that the company will restart Wyoming production by August.
"We see an incredible opportunity in the U.S. from utility demand," he said. "There's a premium on U.S.-origin uranium," he said. "The U.S. government will be buying uranium."
enCore Energy Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EU#NASDAQ">EU</a>)
This Texas-based uranium company in early March announced the first shipment from its restarted Rosita plant in South Texas and a fifth long-term supply contract.&nbsp;
The company has sales contracts with four U.S. utilities for 4.25 million pounds of uranium through 2032, but according to executive chairman&nbsp;William Sheriff in his presentation, this only represents about 30% of its planned production over that time.&nbsp;
The company is working on restarting its Alta Mesa processing plant, also in South Texas, by the second quarter of this year.
"We&#8217;re quite bullish over the next few decades," Sheriff said.

The S&amp;P Global France manufacturing PMI was revised lower to 45.7 in May from a preliminary reading of 46.1, while German manufacturing PMI was revised higher to 43.2 in May from a preliminary level of 42.9.
The HCOB Spain manufacturing PMI declined to 48.4 in May from 49 a month ago. Consumer credit in the UK rose by &pound;1.586 billion in April, while Nationwide House Price Index in the UK fell by 3.4% year-over-year in May.
