The Tesla Inc. TSLA Cybertruck’s stainless steel exterior, while imparting distinctive aesthetics and robustness, apparently comes with a drawback: susceptibility to corrosion and color alterations over time.
What Happened: Tesla has reportedly acknowledged in the Cybertruck owner’s manual that the vehicle’s exterior may undergo changes in color and reflective properties as the stainless steel matures.
The problem was posted by a Reddit user, redwingssuck, on the online forum.
Tesla recommends immediate removal of corrosive substances like grease, oil, bird droppings, tree resin, and dead insects without waiting for a complete wash, even during routine use.
If necessary, denatured alcohol can be used to eliminate tar spots and stubborn grease stains, followed by an immediate wash with water and mild soap, as per the manual.
Tesla advises against the use of chemical, corrosive, or non-pH neutral substances on the exterior, including acidic liquids, road salt, and industrial fallout to prevent corrosion.
The company makes it clear that it cannot be held responsible for damages resulting from not following official guidance.
Why It Matters: Tesla asserts that the Cybertruck’s stainless steel exoskeleton provides enhanced durability, minimizing dents and damages.
The company also claims the vehicle’s steel doors are bulletproof, as demonstrated during the Cybertruck delivery event in late November.
The video showcased the Cybertruck being fired upon with a 0.45 Caliber Tommy gun, a 9mm Glock, and a 9mm MP5-SD. While the bullets dented the steel, none penetrated the cabin.
