In the latest smartphone innovation, Samsung Electronic Co. SSNLF has confirmed incorporating satellite-based features in its upcoming Galaxy S24. This move follows a similar path set by Apple Inc. AAPL, aiming to offer emergency connectivity services to users stuck in remote areas.
What Happened: As reported by 9to5Mac, Samsung executive Park Yong confirmed that Samsung Electronics would also offer satellite connectivity for emergency services on its flagship phones from early 2024. Cupertino has been launching a similar feature since their iPhone 14 lineup last year.
Although there’s no detailed information yet, it’s probable that the Galaxy S24, usually announced in January or February, will pioneer this feature within the company.

For the unversed, the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on the iPhone interacts with users during emergencies, sending the information and their location to a relay center.
Samsung plans to use a similar approach but is also considering allowing users to send and receive all types of messages via satellite, not just emergency services, the report noted.
This feature has proven crucial since its inception on the iPhone, aiding several rescues from precarious situations.
In December last year, it helped to rescue a stranded man in remote Alaska. The feature was also credited for helping a rescue team find two people stranded 300 feet in a remote canyon with zero cell service in the Angeles National Forest.
The Emergency SOS via Satellite feature is currently accessible in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., among others.
Why It Matters: Samsung’s decision aligns with the company’s earlier indications of incorporating advanced satellite connectivity features and an iPhone-inspired design into its Galaxy S24.
