Jim Jordan Condemns Threats Against Republicans Who Opposed His Speakership Bid: 'It's Abhorrent'

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has criticized the surge of threats and calls that Republicans claim to have received after opposing his appointment as the next House speaker, insisting that no American should face harassment due to their beliefs.

According to The Washington Post report, Jordan stated on X, previously known as Twitter, “We condemn all threats against our colleagues and it is imperative that we come together. Stop. It's abhorrent.”

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) revealed that after she switched her vote from Jordan to another Republican, Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), she received “credible death threats and a barrage of threatening calls.”

Despite gaining two Republican votes in his favor in the second round, Jordan lost four of his GOP colleagues. He also received one less vote than he did on Tuesday.

Other lawmakers expressed concerns about threats and harassment they had encountered after voting for speaker candidates other than Jordan. Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) described the opposition to Jordan among the expanding group of lawmakers who voted against him as "profound".

After the vote, Rep. John Rutherford (R-Fla.) blamed Jordan for fostering a culture of aggressive and extremist rhetoric, making him “absolutely responsible” for the threats.

Meanwhile, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) denounced the lack of respect for personal boundaries, stating, “We don't live in fear, but holding people accountable is needed.”

Rep. Jen A. Kiggans (R-Va.) and Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas) reaffirmed their beliefs and principles, both stating that threats and intimidation tactics wouldn’t alter their stand.
