Most Americans Still Wary Of EVs — And Prefer Toyota Over Tesla If They Switched: New Poll

Americans remain skeptical about transitioning from combustion engine vehicles to electric ones, despite the growing popularity of EVs worldwide.

What Happened: In a recent survey conducted by Yahoo Finance and market research firm Ipsos, consumer preferences for hybrid or electric vehicles were influenced by factors such as cost, range, charging infrastructure, and environmental impact.

Out of 1,025 respondents surveyed, 57% indicated they would likely not consider purchasing an electric vehicle for their next vehicle, while 31% expressed a willingness to consider an EV, and 11% were uncertain.

The majority of those who showed reluctance were respondents over 65 years of age, earning less than $50,000 annually, or identifying as Republican. Their concerns mainly revolved around overall costs, limited driving range, and insufficient charging infrastructure.

The survey report highlighted disparities between states in terms of EV popularity, with states like California attributing their higher EV adoption rates to state-specific incentives and educational initiatives.

Tesla Not The Most Popular? For those open to purchasing an EV, most indicated they would consider vehicles from Toyota Motor Corp TM vehicle, followed by Tesla Inc TSLAHonda Motor Co HMCGeneral Motors Co GM and Ford Motor Co F, in that order.

While the U.S. government has set a goal of achieving 50% EV sales by 2030, consumers appear to be divided on embracing this transition.
