Marjorie Taylor Greene Proposes Controversial Measure To Reduce Defense Secretary's Salary To $1 To Avert Government Shutdown

In a surprising move amid the pursuit to prevent a government shutdown, Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has proposed slashing Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin‘s salary to a mere $1.

Greene made the proposal on the House floor, which received support from some unidentified lawmakers. The amendment was subsequently placed in a defense appropriation bill, Business Insider reported.

However, the spending bill, already facing potential failure in the Senate, may find passage even more challenging with the addition of this controversial amendment.

Greene’s proposal appears to be a strategic move to appease a small group of hard-right conservatives, including herself, who are currently obstructing government funding plans.

On the social media platform X, Greene claimed that Austin is to blame for the mishandling of the U.S.’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. She had targeted Austin earlier in September, asserting that he had “jeopardized the national security of the United States.”

Austin, whose annual salary is around $221,000, is the first Black secretary of defense.

The government is on the brink of a shutdown, potentially causing thousands of federal employees to be temporarily out of work and jeopardizing various social service payments.
