This Unexpected Upgrade On iPhone 15's Design Could Topple Samsung's Long-Standing Legacy

In the smartphone arena, the longstanding rivalry between Apple Inc. AAPL and Samsung Electronics SSNLF has witnessed a noticeable reversal over four years, with the former now poised to take the lead in an unexpected area.

What Happened: An Apple leaker, who goes by the name of Ice Universe on Twitter (now X), shared two images comparing the screen-to-body ratio on Samsung flagship models with iPhones.

The first image was from 2019 when the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ had a relatively sleeker bezel compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The second image reflected the upcoming models from the two tech giants, comparing the Samsung Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 Ultra

Previously, the same leaker said that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max model could debut with a front display with incredibly thin bezels, measuring just 1.55 mm — a feat that could soon make it the world’s thinnest smartphone bezel.

This move is consistent with the broader trend in the industry, where a higher screen-to-body ratio has become a highly sought-after feature. China’s Xiaomi’s 13 model currently holds the title of thinnest smartphone bezels with a 1.81 mm.

Another leaker, ShrimpApplePro on X, shared the same information, stating that Cupertino’s iPhone 15 Pro models would come with comparatively thinner bezels than its predecessor

Why It’s Important: Apple has been slow regarding reducing the borders around the screen on their iPhones. They are still selling the iPhone SE, which seems outdated compared to smartphones designed in the current scenario.

However, the tech giant gradually started progressing and even got rid of the big boat-shaped notch at the top of the screen. The borders around the iPhone screens are also getting thinner every year.

Apple is expected to launch iPhone 15 lineup on September 12.
