Republican Senator Urges Trump To Withdraw From 2024 Presidential Race: 'Don't Think Americans Will Vote For Someone Who Has Been Convicted'

Republican senator Bill Cassidy has publicly urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw from the 2024 Republican primary race, contending that Trump would lose in a general election against President Joe Biden, reported USA Today.

During CNN’s “State of the Union", Cassidy said, “He [Trump] will lose to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls. I think any Republican on that stage in Milwaukee will do a better job than Joe Biden, and so I want one of them to win.”

He added, "I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced, but I don't think Americans will vote for someone who has been convicted. I'm just very sorry about how all of this is playing out."

Cassidy has a history of opposing Trump. He was one of seven GOP senators to vote to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial for his alleged incitement of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

Cassidy described Trump’s case over his alleged mishandling of classified documents as a “slam dunk” conviction.
