Quitting Her Engineering Job To Start Travel Blogging Was The 'Best Decision' She Ever Made ... The Money Is Pretty Great Too

Zinger Key Points
  • Gabby Beckford started a travel blogging website that generates more than $170,000 a year.
  • "To be successful, you have to remember your 'why' and keep going. The financial success will eventually follow," Beckford says.

One young entrepreneur gave up an engineering job to start traveling the world and blogging about it. Now she makes nearly $175,000 per year

What To Know: Gabby Beckford is the founder of Packs Light, a travel blogging website that brought in more than $170,000 in gross income in 2021, according to a CNBC report

She generates most of her income by making sponsored posts on social media and writing blog articles, but the journey to the top of the mountain wasn't a straight shot.

Beckford started the blog as a fun side hustle and grew it into a full-time business in less than two years. She had zero experience writing content that would attract readers, and she overcame several failures along the way.

One of the keys to her success was taking on as many roles as she could. When getting started, she had to wear many hats including being a content creator, a marketing consultant, a photographer, a graphic designer and an accountant — and she taught herself how to do it all.

"You can’t begin to delegate tasks until you have a solid understanding of how every aspect of your business works," Beckford said.

Once you understand the ins and outs and get to the point where you are seeing growth, you can start to build a team, she said. Beckford hired a personal assistant, managers and a group of contract writers to help her out.

Building a team helped her to free up time, the "most precious resource," she said. Time is more valuable than money and money shouldn't be your only driver, she added. The journey is much more satisfying if you are aiming to do what you love, make an impact, or free yourself from worry.

"To be successful, you have to remember your 'why' and keep going. The financial success will eventually follow," Beckford said.
