Former President Donald Trump has raised over $34 million for his race for the White House in 2024.
The embattled politician's campaign said fundraising has been seen a huge boost as a result of his recent indictment, reports Politico.
Trump raised $18.8 million in the first quarter through his joint fundraising committee and campaign. However, he generated nearly $15.4 million two weeks after charges of falsifying business records were filed against him, according to his campaign. The indictment has reportedly helped Trump grow his fundraising base — in fact, nearly a quarter of those who contributed to Trump during that period had never given to him, Politico notes.
“In general, any time a candidate’s name is all over the media and dominating attention, it’s good for fundraising,” Eric Wilson, a Republican digital strategist, told the publication. “The wall-to-wall coverage just put him top of mind for donors.”
Trump’s fundraising campaign said he raised roughly $168,000 daily from January 1 until charges were filed against him on March 30. Within 24 hours of the indictment announcement, the former president raised over $4 million.
The campaign collected $14.5 million during the first quarter, most of which came from a transfer by the joint fundraising committee. It spent $3.5 million and had $13.9 million in cash as of March 31.
Politico also notes that Trump’s campaign roped in GOP fundraiser Meredith O’Rourke to oversee its finance efforts.
According to a recent poll, while Trump’s indictment could strengthen his base supporters, it will not necessarily help him gain the moderate voters he needs to win back the White House. In March, a federal grand jury indicted the former president on criminal charges related to hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
