DeSantis Favored Over Trump By Wide Margin In New Poll: Here Are The Percentages

by Chris Katje Benzinga Staff Writer

A recent poll asked Americans who they would vote for in a hypothetical matchup of two Republican candidates likely to run for U.S. President in the 2024 election.

Turns out, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis leads former President Donald Trump by a wide margin.

The poll, which comes about a month after Trump officially announced he was running for president in the 2024 election, shows that voters would favor DeSantis 52% to 38%.

Around 9% of GOP voters were undecided in another poll from the Wall Street Journal.

Republican voters also give DeSantis an 86% favorable rating compared with 74% for Trump, poll data shows.

For all registered voters, those polled gave DeSantis a 43% favorable rating and Trump a 36% favorable rating. This marks the lowest rating for Trump from overall voters dating back to November 2021.

Responders who consider themselves conservative favor Trump 54% to 38% — the one category that saw the former president favored.

The poll also conducted a potential rematch from the 2020 presidential election with a matchup between Trump against President Joe Biden. Of those polled, Biden got 45% of the vote, while 43% went to Trump. Some 12% were undecided.

Trump continues to fall out of favor within his own party. The results of the 2022 election midterms and several Trump-backed candidates' losing their bids has weighed on his odds to get the Republican nomination.

DeSantis has not announced he is officially running for president in the 2024 election, but many expect him to run for the Republican nomination. He won re-election as governor of Florida with a strong 19 percentage point margin, four years after winning by less than a percentage point.

Benzinga recently shared that a USA Today-Suffolk University poll showed 56% of Republican voters picking DeSantis and 33% picking Trump.

Trump's favorability rating fell to 64% in December. That's down from 75% in October.

Trump’s media company Trump Media & Technology Group has a pending SPAC merger with Digital World Acquisition (NASDAQ:DWAC). Under the terms of the deal, Trump would still lead the company if he runs for president.
