Top Indian Telecom Provider Inks 5G Contracts Wih Ericsson, Nokia

  • Ericsson ERIC forged a long-term strategic 5G contract with Indian communications service provider (CSP) Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd to launch 5G Standalone (SA) in the country.
  • The move coincided with the conclusion of the allocation of 5G spectrum via auctions in the country. 
  • Announcing the partnership, Akash Ambani, Chair of Reliance Jio, said, "We are confident that Jio's 5G network will accelerate India's digitalization and serve as the foundation for achieving our nation's 'Digital India' vision."
  • Ericsson will deploy its energy-efficient 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions and E-band microwave mobile transport solutions in the 5G network for Jio.
  • Nokia Corp NOK agreed to supply Jio with equipment from its AirScale portfolio, including base stations, high-capacity 5G Massive MIMO antennas, Remote Radio Heads (RRH) to support different spectrum bands, and self-organizing network software
  • Reliance Jio plans to deploy a 5G standalone network which will interwork with its 4G network. 
  • The network will enable Reliance Jio to deliver advanced 5G services such as massive machine-to-machine communications, network slicing, and ultra-low latency.
  • Ambani commented: "We are confident that our partnership with Nokia will deliver one of the most advanced 5G networks globally."
  • The financial terms of the contracts remained undisclosed.
  • Apple Inc AAPL and Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd SSNLF agreed to upgrade software for their 5G-enabled phones in India by December following a government push.
  • Apple looks to push software upgrades to recent models, including the iPhone 14, 13, 12, and SE.
  • Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL Google said Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 6a were 5G capable devices and looked to enable functionality at the earliest.
  • Price Action: ERIC shares traded higher by 1.94% at $6.32 in the premarket on the last check Monday.
