The film industry is preparing to cap its 2017 awards season with the year’s most anticipated event — the Oscars.

And while the celebrated pictures may be eclipsed by highly politicized acceptance speeches and glaring social statements, one standard of the night will not escape its due attention.

The pre-awards red carpet walk is almost as much a show as is the ceremony, and fashion enthusiasts are already predicting this year’s designer lineup and reflecting on the seasonal precedents.

2017 Trends So Far

Five years ago, it was reds.

Reds and pales, open backs and bustles, sequins and sequins and sequins. The sequins, alone, endured years of fickle trends and made a glare at this year’s red carpet events.

According to Vogue, the 2017 Golden Globe trends were a trio of yellow, tulle and sequin. At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, actors blended in a bit of white, some pinstripes and, in a bizarre twist, bird prints.

For both events, foreign designers were most starkly recognized in runway recaps than were their American competitors. Calvin Klein, which trades under the ticker for PVH Corp (NYSE: PVH), was vastly underrepresented — or at least garnered no publicity for its fashion contributions. Ralph Lauren Corp (NYSE: RL) was equally disregarded.

So, who did the stars end up wearing?

The SAG And Globes Precedent

Viola Davis arrived at the Globes in shimmering yellow Michael Kors Holdings Ltd (NYSE: KORS). The designer also dressed Sienna Miller in a white, cutout-midriff.

Also at the Globes, Nicole Kidman, Felicity Jones and Zoe Saldana showcased Kering (EPA: KER) — which brings the names of Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Saint Laurent. Emma Stone flaunted a water-lillied Alexander McQueen at the SAG Awards, where Kidman donned green sequins complete with parrot wings. Salma Hayek paraded a mustard, pink-trimmed Gucci.

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (EPA: MC) brought the silver paillette dress of Ruth Negga and the lace gown of Michelle Williams at the Globes, and Williams showed off a shimmering sheath for the SAG Awards.

With Natalie Portman in white and Kate Hudson in black, Christian Dior SA (EPA: CDI) spanned the spectrum at the SAGs. Portman, along with Jessica Chastain, donned Prada SPA Com EURO (OTC: PRDSF) at the Globes.

In the realm of jewelry, Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) diamonds brought an extra shimmer out of stars like Reese Witherspoon and Naomie Harris.
