Farhad Manjoo, noted tech columnist with the New York Times, was a guest on CNBC to talk about Goldman Sachs' latest report on why Apple Inc. AAPL should begin selling a monthly subscription model.

According to Manjoo, it's "hard to see" what exactly Apple can introduce to the market that already doesn't exist from the likes of Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN and Netflix, Inc. NFLX. He added that any content that is exclusively available on Apple's device is "an odd thing."

"It's unusual in our media world to have a TV show that only works on an Apple device - or a certain kind of device," he said. "Even exclusive subscriptions like Netflix and Amazon work on pretty much all devices, so it would be an unusual media deal."

Manjoo also pointed out that Apple's executives have touted its Services segment as being its fastest growing part of its overall business while also pulling in a profit. However, as Apple may be tempted to push further into the Services segment with streaming video, it comes at a time when there is a lot of competition and it's "hard to see what it is they can do that is better."

Bottom line, Apple has proven it isn't "best of breed" in other Services sectors such as cloud and Siri so they "have to get much better than they are right now."
