Motorists Spend $198 Million Daily On Gasoline Tax

GasBuddy's senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan stated in a press release that the average American will spend $297 on gasoline taxes this year. This tax is often forgotten and a "hidden pain" — but that doesn't mean it doesn't exit.

As a whole, Americans spend $198 million a day on gasoline taxes, or roughly $72 billion a year. This comes from a mandated 18.4-cent per gallon federal gas tax, which thankfully hasn't been increased since 1993.

Could Things Change?

In addition to a federal tax on gas, Americans also pay local and state taxes which means some Americans have it better than others. Americans are the most taxed at the pump in Pennsylvania where 78-cents per gallon makes it way toward local, state and federal taxes. By comparison, Alaska boasts the best taxes on gas at just 31-cents per gallon while the national average stands at 50-cents per gallon.
