The 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s all-star class of inductees include Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners and Willie Nelson, who celebrated his 90th birthday in April.
The icons will officially be anointed as rock ‘n’ roll royalty on Friday Nov. 3, when the 38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
“This year’s incredible group of Inductees reflects the diverse artists and sounds that define rock & roll,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement this week. “We are honored that this November’s Induction Ceremony in New York will coincide with two milestones in music culture; the 90th birthday of Willie Nelson and the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop.”
Funk-R&B queen Chaka Khan and prolific songwriter-musicians Al Kooper and Bernie Taupin will receive the musical excellence award. Hip-hop founding father DJ Kool Herc and guitar great Link Wray are being inducted as important musical influences. The late Don Cornelius, creator, producer and longtime host of the influential syndicated music show “Soul Train” is receiving the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Cornelius died in 2012.
First Female Rapper
Missy Elliott is being inducted in her first year of eligibility and becomes the first female rapper to enter the prestigious music organization. She is the 11th rapper to receive the honor, following acts like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Jay-Z, N.W.A. and Eminem.
Artists are required to have released their first record 25 years prior to being eligible for induction into the Rock Hall.
