Mark Zuckerberg announced the birth of his third daughter recently with a post on Instagram that also shared the baby’s name. The father of three daughters, Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan have used one common theme when picking out names.
What Happened: Zuckerberg and wife Chan wed 2012 after 10 years of dating. The couple, who met at Harvard University, hosted the wedding as a surprise to 100 people at their home who thought they were celebrating Chan’s medical school graduation.
The Chan and Zuckerberg wedding came one day after shares of Facebook, now known as Meta Platforms Inc., went public. This marked quite the back-to-back days in the life of Zuckerberg, who is a co-founder of Meta Platforms and the CEO.
While he still runs Meta Platforms, Zuckerberg took on a new role in 2015 when he welcomed his first daughter to the world. Since 2015, Zuckerberg is now the father of three daughters, listed below:
- Maxima Chan Zuckerberg, born December 2015
- August Chan Zuckerberg, born August 2017
- Aurelia Chan Zuckerberg, born March 2023
The youngest daughter Aurelia was recently welcomed to the world and Zuckerberg shared a picture and the baby’s name with an Instagram post on March 24.
“Welcome to the world, Aurelia Chan Zuckerberg! You’re such a little blessing,” Zuckerberg said.

What’s in a Name?: While many parents choose to name their children after themselves or other relatives, it would appear that Zuckerberg and Chan took a different direction with the names.
The three children are all named after Roman emperors, a favorite subject of Zuckerberg.
An interview with the New Yorker in 2018 revealed that studying Latin and Ancient Rome became among Zuckerberg’s favorite subjects.
“It’s very much like coding or math, and so I appreciated that,” Zuckerberg said of the Latin language.
Zuckerberg was also fascinated with the history of Rome and the emperors.
“You have all these good and bad and complex figures. I think Augustus is one of the most fascinating. Basically, through a really harsh approach, he established 200 years of world peace.”
The New Yorker highlights that Augustus Caesar helped turn Rome into an empire after Egypt, parts of Spain and other Central Europe. The emperor also eliminated political opponents.
“On the one hand, world peace is a long-term goal that people talk about today. Two hundred years feels unattainable,” Zuckerberg said.
Zuckerberg said the trade-off for peace “didn’t come for free, and he [Caesar] had to do certain things.”
Zuckerberg and Chan took their honeymoon in 2012 to Rome, a place that remains special to the couple today.
“My wife was making fun of me, saying she thought there were three people on my honeymoon: me, her, and Augustus. All the photos were different sculptures of Augustus.”
Maxima was likely named after Magnus Maximus, a Roman emperor who reigned from 383 to 388.
August was named after Augustus Caesar, who was the first Roman emperor, reigning from 27 BC to 14 AD.
Zuckerberg’s third daughter Aurelia is likely named after Marcus Aurelius, who reigned from 161 to 180. Aurelian is also the name of a Roman emperor who reigned from 270 to 275.
Zuckerberg has previously taken paternity leave for the birth of his children and is expected to go on leave for two months.
Meta Platforms was recently the subject of additional layoffs, with some experts pointing to the job cuts needing to be completed before Zuckerberg’s leave.
