This Billionaire Made Bank, Boasts A 30% Return Despite 2022's Market Crash

Zinger Key Points
  • In the second quarter, CVR Energy saw its revenues surge by more than 31% quarter-over-quarter to $3.14 billion.
  • The Texas based holding company has seen its returns shoot up by more than 138% year-to-date.

Billionaire Carl Icahn saw the net asset value of Icahn Enterprises IEP increase by nearly 30% in the first six months of 2022.

As inflation remains frothy at 40-year highs, the Federal Reserve is left with no choice other than to hawkishly raise interest rates. This is a large contributor to why it is much harder to see your money double this year, compared to 2020 and 2021.

“We printed up too much money, and just thought the party would never end," Icahn said at MarketWatch’s Best New Ideas in Money Festival. "And the party’s over."

The S&P 500 had a rough first half of the year — its worst since the 1970s. Icahn, however, didn't suffer the bear market drawdown.

Besides owning a 64% stake in Icahn Enterprises, Icahn’s second most owned position is in CVR Energy CVI, where he owns more than 70 million shares.

CVR Energy engages in petroleum refining and nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing through its holdings in CVR Refining LP and CVR Partners LP UAN.

Why does Icahn like Texas-based CVR Energy? “You can't build another refinery in this country,” he said. Here's a closer look:

  • Returns spiked more than 138% year-to-date, as the firm generated $7.2 billion in net sales in 2021.
  • In the second quarter (Q2), CVR Energy revenues surged by more than 31% quarter-over-quarter to $3.14 billion, with adjusted earnings per share of $2.45.
  • It owns a 37% stake in its CVR Partners, a nitrogen fertilizer product supplier, as its principal products include Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) and ammonia.
  • The fertilizer subsidiary CVR Partners is currently up nearly 45% year-to-date, posting solid revenue growth since 2021.
  • CVR Energy also has a Q2 cash dividend of 40 cents per share as well as a special dividend of $2.60 per share for 2022, according to CEO Dave Lamp.
  • CVR Partners announced a cash distribution of $10.05 per common unit for the 2022 second quarter.
